Los Straight Jackets In Brooklyn

Howlin Thurstons (howlinthurstons) - 27 Oct 2003 13:47:59

We had the opportunity to checkout Los Straight Jackets the past Friday night at
Southpaw in Brooklyn, New York. Southpaw is a fairly large size club on the
border of Park Slope/South Brooklyn neighborhoods. A $12 cover charge and
moderately priced drinks ($6 for premium liquor and $3 PBS & Reingold) made it
and affordable evening. On street parking however, was difficult to say the
least.
It was a night of retro rock starting with the opening band The Woggles, a
garage Band from Atlanta that we found reminiscent of 60’s bands like the Seeds,
Count 5 and the Kinks. These guys rocked hard laying down a high energy,
nonstop set that had everyone in the club dancin’and a prancin’.
Los Straight Jackets started their show before they even took the stage with old
Drive-In-Movie style announcements over the club’s sound system counting down
the remaining minutes to the start of their set. Once they took the stage they
delivered a rockin’ set of retro instro surf complete with their usual costumes,
choreography and bad Spanish.
About half way through their set they brought out Eddie “The Chief” Clearwater
for some good old-style (a la Chuck Berry) Rock & Roll. Backed by LSJ, Eddie, a
wonderful showman, played a great guitar laying down some monster riffs while
holing the instrument behind his head. After several tunes, Eddie left the
stage allowing LSJ to finish their set, which they did in flawless style.
Both LSJ & Eddie Clearwater came back on stage for an encore that lasted almost
as long as the set. Los Straight Jackets ended the night with a Killer Kover of
the old Louis Prima/Benny Goodman/Gene Krupa Big Band Hit “Sing, Sing, Sing”.
All in All it was a night of great Rock & Roll.

intense guitar drive and a sandpaper edge" --Phil Dirt, Reverb Central
