string trouble!

mono_tones_1 - 24 Oct 2003 03:46:18

Hi guys,
at rehearsal yesterday i did some soldering under the hood and
therefore had to loosen the strings. On turning them back up, the
high E just kept loosening every time, couldn't get it into pitch....
until at a certan point the string came off altogeher... turned out
the winding on the ball end just unwound, and the little ball just
came off... on a .011 d'Addario chromes at 15 euro's a set!
has anyone had this happen before?

On Jag style trems especially, I have been fighting that same problem for a
couple of years. The problem seems to appear in certain batches of strings that
i have purchased for touring. On our 2002 Euro tour the high "E" would start to
unwind itself at the ball end about the middle of the second song of the set.
The next tour I had mostly all bad "G" strings, and the next tour mostly all bad
"D"strings. I like the sound of the "Chromes", so I put up with it.
Maybe the tailpiece, because it pulls the string straight instead of bending it
over at a right angle, causes the problem. A reinforced wind would be a nice and
needed improvement.

Happened to me too.
Was rather funny though. Had been playing guitar and afterwards left the
house to do some shopping. When I came back I saw that there was a string
missing, not broken, just missing as if someone took it off . Although
nobody else at home. Mystery... A few day's later I found the string under
the seat and I realized the ball end came off, the string left somehow the
tuner and catapulted itself trough the room.

It's probably not due to the straight pull on a jag, cause with me it
happened on a strat. still, this shouldn't happen with strings that
expensive, esp since they're ont sold seperatly (at least not here)

This is one of the reasons I prefer Fender Super Bullets. The end caps
on those are molded around the strings (and designed to fit a strat trem
system, better than ring-end strings). It's all a lot more stable.

Just a couple days ago. I have never broken a string playing. I had stopped
playing, put the guitar upright in my lap, and brushed a finger across the
strings behind the bridge. The ball fell into my lap! Couple days later, the
D string broke but the winding didn't! Weird. I've never seen either of
these happen before. The set was Dean Markley LTHB. They were old but not
THAT old. I'd already bought a set to change them. Same set. Probably won't
buy again.

Hi All,
I agree with Dave. The "G" string from the Chromes (11's) were
going quickly and just about everytime I would get into Journey to
The Stars). It happened on about every G string I pulled out of the
new sets of the Chromes. I was pretty damned ticked as we were
auditioning new people for our band and this nonsense was going on.
I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one. They were on a Strat.
Realistically, it may have been a combination of my tech. and
the faulty strings but some of those string were brand-spankin' new.
I thought that the strings were too skinny and went with the 12
Chromes. I have been too skittish to play Journey but I have not had
that G-string bring in quite a long time if ever. The 12's suited my
style best and seemed to be a movement in the right direction. I hope
this helps.

I thought they stopped making those! I used to use them on my Strat years ago.

Um... The originals were a single extruded hunk of metal. Made all the sense
in the world to me. If I see 'em, I'll buy 'em!

To be a little bit clearer describing my string problems, the high "E's" were
unwinding, and when I had trouble with either the "D" or the "G" strings they
would rattle like a bunch of rings spinning on a pole. Maybe all of this was
caused by the wrapat the ball end becoming loose.

Hi,
Yep, I had the same trouble this week. Also a 0.12 d'addario.
When tuning the string, it kept loosing until it popped at the ball
point as you described.
Are you going to see the Nebulas one last time In Turnhout?
I will certainly go, since I missed their 50th show at Gent.
