Jag question

Milt Scholl (snowmtngoat) - 23 Oct 2003 09:28:30

Hi all,
I just built my son a jag-style quitar using parts from
Warmoth and a home built body. Two questions for any jag
owner out there. What is the height of the bridge over
the body? I read hear and there that the neck is set
at 5 degrees back, but that seems to be alot. If I know
what the bridge height is, then I can make the right shim
for the neck.
The other question concenrs wiring ... anyone have a pointer
showing a proper schematic, NOT a wiring diagram. I need to
what kind of slide switches are used, i.e. SPDT, DPDT, SPST, cross contact, side
contact, etc.
Thanks in advance!
Milt

Hey Milt,
For your parts questions, you might try the Fender Forum, they have an
excellent Jaguar/Jazzmaster sub-forum. Lots of technical guys over there
could probably help you (I'm thinking of Jim Shine in particular).
As for the neck tilt, I haven't measured mine, but I agree, 5 degrees sounds
excessive. Your bridge height will vary according to what kind of action you
can get away with, how much your neck is shimmed, etc. In short, I don't
think their is a single answer for everyone.
Good luck,
BN

First, string the guitar to pitch, set the truss rod. Factory setup calls for
.012" at the 7th fret. That's with a capo on the first fret, and holding down
the string at the last fret.
The strings should go across the 4/64" {2/32"} line on a 6" metal ruler while
the ruler is resting on the 17th fret. note: * After the nut slots are cut at
.020" - .022" the string will be just above the 4/64" line on the ruler *, but
not yet. You will cut the nut after all this other set up is completed.
Adjust the intonation screws to get a kind of close to an intonated "step
ladder" look that you can fine tune later. Look from the side at the bridge to
adjust the saddles and the two bridge height adjustment screws so you get
desired action height while not letting the string make contact on the back of
the bridge - very important to avoid unnecessary buzzing. * Sometimes you have
to grind down the ends of some of the intonation screws if they are too close to
the vibrating strings *.
If the action is too high, shim the neck accordingly to bring the fret board up
toward the strings. Place the shim, paper from a matchbook, etc., in the neck
pocket space that is most toward the neck pickup, but not so wide as to cover
the neck bolt holes.
Jags need more neck angle to avoid having to use too many shims, especially if
you are going to use a mute. Also, extra neck angle gives a little more down
pressure on the bridge saddles.
I think the slide switches are SPST. Six terminals. Allparts may have those
switches.
good luck, we're counting on you,
