Just trying to liven things up. What are you playing/listening too lately?
I recently got the new Bambi Molestors "Sonic Bullets: 13 From the Hip".
Very good stuff. There is new instrumentation on here and one song has some
spoken word vocals. But most of the songs are solid progressions from their
earlier (and impressive) work. I really like how the 2 guitars weave in and
out and dance around. It can be quite dizzying at times (in a very good
way).
I also got "Forbidden Sounds" from The Surf Trio. If you like the Bomboras,
Satan's Pilgrims, and early Man or Astro-Man? you will like this. Very nice.
Cool artwork too.
And let see..I also picked up Los Meltones "Surf Before Sunrise". I haven't
listened to it too much yet but there is some really good songs on here. But
on first listen some of them don't leave an impression. Some nice Bass VI
work on one song.
As for playing, I am attempting to get out of my guitar rut by taking on
"Toes on The Nose", a very good surf compilation disc. I am going to try and
make myself tab out all 32 songs. I'll probably be asking for help :^)

Current drive-time rotation for my commute (1 hr. each way), in no
particular order of preference:
"Instrumentals in the Key of Boss!" - Sir Finks
"The Dragster" - Jim Messina and the Jesters
"Cool Surfin'" - The Looney Tunes
"Flippin' the Bird With The Treblemakers" - The Treblemakers
"Reaction Time" - Dragstrip
If you don't have these CD's, get 'em!! They are all quite good . . .
-Dick
Good question... I've been listening to:
-the Torquays' "Road Trip"
-Early Canadian Rockers vol 6&7
-Instrobeat 2000 (Canadian West Coast Comp from Surfduster Rich)
-Introducing the Esquires
Playing wise I've been learning some of the tunes from the "Early
Canadian Rockers" CD's, and "The Man From Adano" from the Esquires.
Mike/USK
lately i've been listening to Mickey Baker "Rock With
a Sock", Roy Lanham (Bear Family CD), The Fireballs,
that old Rhino-Guitar Player Surf comp and as always,
The Ventures.

It's a long dirve to Oxnard from Glendale but I do it twice a week and I
that's when I spin many disks. The Ventures are in my steady diet, today it
was their Batman album (they recorded that one in a week including the time
it took to write the tunes). I also listened to the Torquay's "Road Trip" and
then a classical guitar homemade comp CD-R.

Hey:
I've been listening to The Wipeouters, P'Twaang!!! an *excelent*
album. I highly recommend it if you haven't heard them yet. It's a
project by Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh, Robert Casale (from Devo), and
Drummer Josh Mancell; it has the Devo feel, but there's no doubt that
it's surf (most of it anyway); Recommended tracks: 6 - Ravin' Surf;
9 - Wounded Surfer.
Have fun!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I wish to retract this statement. I took a road trip this weekend and
brought this CD along. It is easily in the top 25% of my CD collection. And
unless my ears deceive me there is some Bass VI on at least 2 songs. I look
forward to hearing Mel Waldorf's new project "The Mach IV" with Ferenc from
Pollo Del Mar.
Also, "Spongebob Squarepants" on Nickelodeon plays snippets of Los Meltones
(along with a few other surf bands, notably the Woodies and Blue Hawaiians)
every now and then. Cool!
What I've been playing to recently:
Fender IV - Mar Gaya
Richie Allen - Goochi Bamba
Man or Astroman songs
different version of The Hearse
Frank Klepacki - It Came From Red Alert (AKA Bond Alert AKA Secret
Song from C&C Red Alert soundtrack)
Famous Monsters - Lone Wolf Massacre
Dick Dale - Shake & Stomp
13 Crimson Ghosts - Halloween
different versions of Meadowland/Cossack Patrol
different versions of Journey to the Stars
Saturn 5 - Voyage Around the Moon
Ghastly Ones - Ghastly Stomp (heard they broke up, too bad)
The Grinch
Dick Dale - The Wedge
And then I'm also playing all the songs that we play in Monsters From
Mars. As far as listenning to, my surf playlist is about 650 songs
long and I've got a bunch of records and CD's too.

Hi Thor,
What do you think of Famous Monsters? I've never heard their stuff. (Okay
I'll admit it, I am a White Zombie fan...)
Where did you hear about the Ghastly Ones breaking up? I periodically ask
about them but no one seems to know anything. The last thing I heard was
that Greg Hunt of The Bomboras had joined them as a 2nd guitar player. But
that seems like a few years ago. Did they ever put anything else out besides
their Zombie-Au-Go-Go release (an excellent album IMHO)?
Thanks,
BN

I don't really like the Famous Monsters that much, just that song.
The voice dubbing over on their CD gets really old really fast.
There's also no bass, just two guitar and drums.
The bassist in my band was talking with the bassist from this other
SD surf band, the Creepy Creeps, and this guy is appearently friends
with some guys from the Bomboras or something and he said that both
the Bomboras and the Ghastly Ones are dead. One guy who was in the
Bomboras at one point played with the Creepy Creeps earlier this
year, but has since then quit. That's all I really know.
