Hello everyone! I'm new to the surf music scene, just caught a few acts here in
So. Cal. but read about soooo many 'famous' names that I missed. My favorite
way to spend my day off is getting on my motorcylce, head to the beach, catch a
surf band, swim (in summer) grab a bit to eat, explore PCH and head home,
nothing' is better. I'll make that up next spring. Here's my question:
What's the best way to get into playing surf style music, I bought my daughter a
Fender Squire kit, I know, made in China, probably not in your league, but will
it get us started? Is Ivan on these posts, the Ivan from the Space Cossacks?
If so, I'm honored, you rock!. Just got your 2 cd's. I love 'Mir Rescue'. Any
input would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks in advance, Henry wrote:

Ugghh...Dick Dale bashing!! You are hurting my feelings and my rugged
He-Man sensibilities. I did enjoy the "true" story of how Elvis got
the decal in Vegas! I think Evel Knievel was there that weekend, too.
On a different subject, that Eddie Bertrand sure was good, huh!

I have a string question. I usually play Dean Markley blue steel lthb (10-52)
strings on my strat. Anyway, I just aquired a Jag(to give my small hands a
break) and I'm wondering whether to go with 12 or 13 flatwound chromes. 13
sounds really thick to me, but I seem to get the impression that you can go a
bit thicker with a flatwound. Is this the case?
Thanks,

I have also held dicks guitar before, as My Friend Marty and I have
helped Dick's Roadie(Mike) load up after some shows. I was more
impressed with all the amps and his reverb tank actually. And I got
to play Ron's Bass.
I bet that was taken when Sam and Dusty stpped by Ferenc's house
after a Dick show recently. I heard you guys recorded a song.
But forgot the name Dusty had told me.
By the way Ferenc aren't you in enough bands.
See ya next weekend for the Slacktone shows.

Hi Henry,
Most welcome to the list. It's a great place with great people from all
over the planet.
Your Daughters Squire kit ain't that bad IMHO, it should be able to
produce some surf alike sounds.
Perhaps add some reverb (digital or analog) whatever you can get your
hands on and set the little 15 in clean mode and there you go.
Enjoy,
Jerry S.

Don't get me wrong, I should have mentioned that I am listening to this
disk through ears that are still ringing from to much Dick Dale at far
to
much volume! Huh???
Dick Dale is the King of the 1st wave and I am learning through bleeding
ears...
It's all good, rick Dale?

I don't know if Link has, but I've been playing it once or twice a day
since
I got it three weeks ago. Highly recommended! (Plus, I'm unhealthily
hung up
on the cover girl.)

I have a string question. I usually play Dean Markley blue steel lthb
(10-52) strings on my strat. Anyway, I just aquired a Jag(to give my
small hands a break) and I'm wondering whether to go with 12 or 13
flatwound chromes. 13 sounds really thick to me, but I seem to get the
impression that you can go a bit thicker with a flatwound. Is this the
case?
Thanks,
CG

Brian,all
I have also held dicks guitar before, as My Friend Marty and I have
helped Dick's Roadie(Mike) load up after some shows. I was more
impressed with all the amps and his reverb tank actually. And I got
to play Ron's Bass.
I bet that was taken when Sam and Dusty stpped by Ferenc's house
after a Dick show recently. I heard you guys recorded a song.
But forgot the name Dusty had told me.
By the way Ferenc aren't you in enough bands.
See ya next weekend for the Slacktone shows.

acts here in So. Cal. but read about soooo many 'famous' names that I
missed. My favorite way to spend my day off is getting on my

grab a bit to eat, explore PCH and head home, nothing' is better.
I'll make that up next spring. Here's my question: What's the best
way to get into playing surf style music, I bought my daughter a
Fender Squire kit, I know, made in China, probably not in your
league, but will it get us started? Is Ivan on these posts, the Ivan
from the Space Cossacks? If so, I'm honored, you rock!. Just got
your 2 cd's. I love 'Mir Rescue'. Any input would be greatly
appreciated!!!
> Thanks in advance, Henry
Hello Henry;
Yes, I'm Ivan of the Space Cossacks. Thank you very much for the
compliments, and I'm glad to hear you liked our CDs. And you'll find
that MANY great surf musicians are on this list - you'll definitely
learn a lot.
How old is your daughter? I really don't know anything about the
Squier kit, but it's probably a decent way to get somebody started.
It's still Fender, after all!
Now, count your lucky stars for living in SoCal where you can as you
put it "get on my motorcylce, head to the beach, catch a surf band,
swim, grab a bite to eat, explore PCH and head home." Sounds
perfect. Can't do that in Michigan very much...
