I have also held dicks guitar before, as My Friend Marty and I have
helped Dick's Roadie(Mike) load up after some shows. I was more
impressed with all the amps and his reverb tank actually. And I got
to play Ron's Bass.
I bet that was taken when Sam and Dusty stpped by Ferenc's house
after a Dick show recently. I heard you guys recorded a song.
But forgot the name Dusty had told me.
By the way Ferenc aren't you in enough bands.
See ya next weekend for the Slacktone shows.

Jeff-
It's funny you should mention about the shared pool of talent in LA bands-- I
always had a little chuckle- How many surf bands are there in LA: One. I see
things different now, and playing with other bands has been great.
So let me add a little more to my statement about how you can never be in too
many bands. I played with only one band for almost 10 years, as the leader and
songwriter. I felt my playing and writing was stagnating, just repeating the
same stuff. So I wanted to play with other people to broaden my horizons. After
Mel left the Alvarados, we decided to get the Mach IV together based on our
mutual love for trad surf. Then the Aqua-Velvets called when Hank left the band.
Then the Insect Surfers called when they needed a bass player for a NorCal tour.
Then Mel started the Meshugga Beach Party. All of these bands have allowed me to
work with brilliant songwriters, guitar players, rhythm sections and different
styles. With M4s and AVs I am mostly the rhythm dude so I have had to put a lot
more effort into my right hand technique, especially on the Shadows and Ventures
style songs. I really never had any cause in my life to work on that. Miles is a
fantasticly well versed player yet subtle, it is amazing to watch him. Mel has
taught me so much about economy. David Arnson taught me how to pogo out of tempo
with the beat.
I know there are a lot of aspiring players on this list, and I have to say that
even after playing in bands for 25 years there is so much to learn.

PS: The song I recorded with Sam and Dusty is called "Eskimo Pie". Dusty said he
may want to write and sing lyrics for it- we'll see. wrote:

Ferenc,
Very Cool, thanks for the short history on that stuff.
Yeah Dave is the king of Pogo while Playing. He was breakdancng,
standing on his head(literally feet on his head bent like a pretzel)
Disco strutting/Iggy Pop and Mick Jagger Posturring all durring a
guitar break in a song. At there show for my Birthday last night.
That boy knows how to move to a groove.
Oh man, that would be too funny to hear Dusty sing.
see ya in a few days,

Ferenc hit it right on the nose. The more musicians you play with,
the more you pick up. His senario is similar to mine. Being the
song-writer/guitarist for Urban Surf Kings for the last 9 years,
I've recently started Mr Mumps Twang Gang with other musicians to
play more Link Wray style music (primitive R&R instros). We also
mix up USK by brining in an other guitarist to change things up. It
gives me a chance to work on the rhythm aspect of the guitar, which
is not only challenging, but a great deal of fun too. Plus I've
started playing Westen Swing tunes with another guy on Ukuleles.
Mix it up.
