String question

CMG (fleegix99) - 09 Oct 2003 23:12:46

I have a string question. I usually play Dean Markley blue steel lthb (10-52)
strings on my strat. Anyway, I just aquired a Jag(to give my small hands a
break) and I'm wondering whether to go with 12 or 13 flatwound chromes. 13
sounds really thick to me, but I seem to get the impression that you can go a
bit thicker with a flatwound. Is this the case?
Thanks,
CG

Hi GG,
I got 0.12 on my Jaguar, which I think is thick enough. Anyway there is
no tonal improvement when using 0.13 (IMHO)
Also bear in mind that you might have to adjust your tussrod a bit,
since the tension of d'Addario chrome flatwounds is a lot more then the
usual roundwounds.
IMHO a roundwound looks thicker then a flatwound, but once you are
playing them, they don't feel that different qua thickness. Flats are
always a bit more stiff, so you have to get used to them, especialy if
you do a lot of bends. But 0.12 is really heavy enough for a Jag. The
low E is a 0.52 which is quiete a thick string.

You can always go to 11 flats, it's not as much of a transition and
still sounds great with a Jag.

black '62 reissue Strat: Rotosound Purples (nickelwound) 12-52
fiesta red '89 Strat: Gibson Sonomatic Nickelwound 12-56
shoreline gold '62 reissue Strat: D'Addario regular roundwounds 11-49
MIJ Limited Edition Jazzmaster: D'Addario Chromes 12-52
Heavier gauges can feel and sound great, and you can get used to them
by switching up slowly. It's taken me 13 years to go from 9-42 to 12-
56! But I'm glad I did. I've only started playing 12-gauge strings
on Strats around '99 (I used them on the Jazzmaster since '96). For
playing sixties surf/instro music, heavy gauge strings are an
absolutely necessary component to sound and play 'authentically' (of
course, if that's what you're after).
BTW, Jags with their shorter neck scale can easily take a heavier
gauge - I think the rule of thumb is that you can go up one string
gauge level on a Jag compared to Jazzmaster/Strat and the feel
(tension) will be largely the same.
