Digital Reverb Boxes

alansmillar - 07 Oct 2003 03:56:13

I posted before a about getting a good surf sound on a budget. When
i lived in the UK i priced re-issue reverb tanks at about 300 pounds
(which is about $500). Well out of my range if I'm buying an amp as
well. More if i buy here in South Africa.
What do people think about the digital reverb simulation pedals? I
saw that the newish Boss RV-5 claims to have good spring and plate
simulation. The other one I saw was the Digitech that makes similar
claims.
Is their any bonus in these stomp boxes that simulate amp reverb or
is the sound little better than your average multi FX unit's (easy
and cheap to find second hand) reverb?
thanks for the help
Alan

Here's my quick assessment of various stompboxes,
couple of which I actually just sampled this past
Saturday in a store.
First off, the ElectroHarmonix Holy Grail pedal is
probably the best. I owned one and let it go for a
tank, but then I had to sell the tank (Gavin, you out
there?) and wished I still had the pedal. After
playing a few other pedals this one still stays at the
top of the heap.
The Digitech RV-2 is good. I was surprised, actually.
Not as authentic sounding for spring as the EH pedal,
but you can dial in a greater variety of
things...which doesn't make it any more or less useful
for surf, but kinda neat if you'd like to sound weird
or try other things.
The Digitech RV-3 wasn't any better sounding than the
RV-2, I'm not sure why it's there.
The first reverb that Boss put out (I forgot what
model name) sounded pretty good, but I would probably
take either the Digitech RV-2 or the EH Holy Grail
over it. I have a soft spot for Boss pedals though,
so I keep wanting to go back and try it.
I didn't know that Boss had an RV-5, I'm gonna have to
check that out.
