vox style guitars

Ian (skatalite_of_love) - 05 Oct 2003 01:22:21

Does any body have an opinion on these? I have been looking at
phantom guitar works copy of the old vox phantom. It has a bigsby
trem on it but other than that is it quality/ sound good?

Hi,
I have an original 60ties Vox Astro 4 Bass which was made in Italy. It
has nice sound qualities, but it is in no way a Fender.
Just to point out that Vox was and still is very known for their amps,
but not their guitars.
Most U.K. made guitars were made in Furniture factories, because of the
high demand. Later on Production of the guitars moved to Italy where the
better instruments were made.
As for the copies, I have no idea. I would advise to play it, and if you
like it get it, if not leave it alone.
The Phantom has a killer look with it's teardrop shaped body, but looks
can decive, especially when talking copies. But for a retail price of +
$500 I would expect a good instrument and not a cheap knock off. The
Bigsby looks like a copy as Bigsby as a brand is not mentioned in the
advertising.
Just my two cents,
Jerry S.

Thats a really bad web site. They need to post some specs.
What's the scale length? What's the fretboard radius? Is that a 3 way switch
or what? They need some close up pics of the bridge and bridge saddles.
Didn't the more British invasion type bands play those things anyway? I'm
not saying you couldn't surf on them, just wondering out loud.

I can't say much for the copies, but the VOX
Phantom 12 string that I had in the late 60's-
early 70's was alright...tight, crisp sound when
using the pickup by the bridge, warm when
using the pickup at the neck...didn't like
both pickups on at the same time tho.
Sounded a bit muddy to me.
It had a muting bar at the bridge you could
actuate and make it sound kinda like a banjo,
like in "Mrs. Brown, You've got a lovely daughter",
by Hermans Hermits.
It also had a whammy bar, which on a 12 string is
a big mistake. Just couldn't keep it in tune if ya
used it much.
It was white on white and looked smashing!
Sold it to get a Mosrite.
Miss it, tho...
Thanks for letting me reminisce...

i played it and thought it was alright i have to get a job and to get the
cash... the copy in the pawn shop is different than the ones in the
advertising, it actualy said "bigsby" on it and since i like gretsch alot i
recognized it as authentic.

Vox Phantoms were a favourite of Agent Orange...not a true
"surf band" but something to check out.
