Re: More Speaker Questions: how about Oxfords?

rio452001 - 02 Oct 2003 15:05:32

Hi Jerry, and thanks for your comments.
I do play a Jaguar.
The other inexpensive option available to me is a pair of re-coned
Oxford 12L6's taken from a 1971 Twin Reverb, I think.
How do you folks think those would work?

Hi Rio,
I once coupled my SF Banmaster reverb head onto a 64 2x12" Bassman
cabinet loaded with one Oxford 12L6 and one Phillips speaker (the
Phillips speaker sounded very alike) The sound was pretty nice to my
ears full, sparkly and rich. I tried both a Jaguar (with three PU lay
out and a Jazzmaser with SD Pu's) So far te best sounds I heard my
Bandmaster with. The onboard reverb and vibrato sounded amazing, much
better then with the Celestions I usually use. Both speaekers in the
Bassmasn cabinet were not reconed and I assume 100% original.
They would be a good alternative for surf IMHO. A amp tech I once spoke
with suggested Eminence as a good speaker since It was good for both
clean and distorted sounds. He instaled Eminence rather than Jensen when
he restored an Older Fender combos and cabinets.
I would suggest to try as many speakers as possible. All depends on what
you really want. I want to be blown away with reverb drenched rich sound
(Like a JBL 130F, for instance) Many Jaguar users like the 15" inch
speaker (single or dual) for it's great response for surf tones. I only
heard it with a Jazzmaster with was to bassy for me (blonde showman with
a single 15" JBL 130F and the famous "tone ring") , but a jag would
sounds nice with it tough. But this is just my personal opinion.
I was once told that the speakers used, make 60 to 70% of the sound of
your guitar, so the choiche of speakers would make a definte difference.
