RE: [SurfGuitar101] The right guitar and amp??

Johnston, Rick (ricknautica) - 02 Oct 2003 14:38:55

HELP!!! Sorry for yelling, but I need to make a decision on a 62 reissue
strat with EMG pick ups and a Clapton preamp. I also have the opportunity
to pick up a Polytone mini brute, can you guys give me some advice on this
set up as far as producing a good, wet surf tone???
Thanks!

I'll take a shot. The Clapton preamp adds midrange to the tone -
like adding steroids. When reading Clapton's description of it, he
said it made the Start sound more like a Gibson, so it apparently
increases the output, overdriving the amp more. Not useful for
surf. I don't know if it'll have an impact on sound when kept on
minimum, but most likely it will to some extent. EMG pickups are
usually used by guys that play very distorted metal - i think their
highest profile users are Kirk Hammett of Metallica and David Gilmour
(who also tends to use very distorted guitar tones). However, when
played very cleanly they will not give you the warm sound that we
associate with a Strat - I think the term 'clinically clean' would be
most appropriate.
HOWEVER, I'm a big fan of '62 reissue Strats (I have two) and would
recommend that you get the guitar if you can get a good price and
then take the entire pickguard assembly, the pickups, the preamp, the
knobs, etc. and sell it on eBay - you'll be able to get GOOD bucks
for it - probably between $150 and $200. Then buy yourself an
already preassembled '62 reissue assembly, which will probably cost
you more like $120, even new (Fender's '57/'62 reissue alnico pickups
are GREAT!). And be happy with your awesome sounding '62 reissue
Strat!

Hello Rick;
Glad to be of help. As far as SM SSL1 pickups, I don't have any
experience with them, but Seymour Duncan makes GREAT stuff always,
and I seem to remember that this is their plain vanilla vintage Strat
model (I could be wrong, though - check somewhere on the web), which
will probably sound great.

I firmly second, third, and fourth what Ivan sezs..let me summarize:
Clapton preamp + EMGs for trad surf = yuk.
'62 RI Strat with '57/'62 RI pickups = great sounding versatile instro
guitar
Or, you could take our advice and tell us to take a hike, and invent your
own cool new instro sound with that gear. Stranger things have happened.
Good luck,

Your comments are apreciated Brad!
How do you define '57/'62 RI pickups?
This guitar is like an over powered anti-tone bomb!!! LOL
I'm looking at Seymour Duncan SSL1 pick ups, but I really want that vintage
sound. Ivan also suggested (Fender's '57/'62 reissue alnico pickups, is
that what you are referring to???
Thanks again, Rick!

Rick, '57/'62 RI (stands for "ReIssue") is the standard pickup on
Fender's '57 and '62 reissue Strats. They can be bought separately,
as well, and they're all made with Alnico V magnets, like the
originals were in the fifties and sixties (a very important part of
the vintage tone).
Seymour Duncan SSL1 - I just checked their website, and it was as I
thought: these are their pure and simple reproductions of vintage
Strat pickups. Their equivalent of Fender's '57/'62 RI pickups. is
there any difference between these two? I really don't know.
Probably very little, if any. They're both great pickups, and you
won't go wrong with either one, they'll both deliver oodles of
vintage sound.
Hope that helps.

Rick,
Yes, I'm referring to the same ones as Ivan. I don't know much about the SD
SSL1s, but I can tell you that I have the original Tex-Mex neck pu in my
Cali fiesta red maple neck strat, and an SD Antiquity in the mid and bridge
positions..the SD in the neck position was too dark sounding. I have read
several reviews of the pus Ivan refers to, and heard them.very nice. I have
also read (but not actually heard), that the SD Antiquity IIs are good for
surf / instro, more sparkle / 60s tone. Let us know what you decide.

Strat!
