Re: [SurfGuitar101] Digest Number 85

Bubba Gump (brother_reynolds) - 22 Feb 2002 18:30:47

Marty,
Apologies for soudning like a Judas Priest fan towards
you. I had no idea what the guy was into, or that he
was playing with Mullett heroes like Steve Vai. I'll
be the first to cheer a response of us few that feel
Surf music should be kept beautiful and traditonal and
not overlapped with Hippie or Heavy Metal sounds.
My only point was, we should let people post their
songs for our opinions. We don't have to download
them. Hell, I've never once downloaded anything
posted on a mailing list, and I never, repeat NEVER
ever download an MP3 by a list memeber that I don't
recognize by name. But that doesn't mean that they
shouldn't be allowed to post.
Just because some guy posts on every guitar site that
he is a Surf guitarist or a Prog Rock guitarist (to
the next list of course) or a Heavy Metal guitarist,
that doesn't automatically mean that his IS a Surf
guitarist. I don't fear people like that passing
themselves off as Surf guitarists, because no one is
listening to them anyway.
If the guy plays with Steve Vai or Styx in concert and
screams, "Hey now, this is a Surf guitar song for all
you headbangers!!!!!! Wooooo!!!!" or something like
that, I still don't think those people are gonna run
home and tell their friend with the peach fuzz
moustache working on his 1979 Camaro that they saw a
Surf guitarist or Surf band in concert. Believe me, I
think the genre is safe in the hands of those who
cherish it now. This generation of Surf afectionados
has treated it with much more reverence than the
previous did when Madsion Ave came a-calling.
By the way, for anyone in L.A., next Wednesday, at 11
p.m. (I think) there is going to be a performance of
the Partridge Family Temple at the Rainbow, which is a
Heavy Metal club. That's some cool irony there.
Mod-God worship in the "House of the Hair Band." 99%
of us there will totally get it, but you can just see
that one perect who come there regularly standing
around holding a bottle of Busch (does Busch beer come
in a bottle?) looking dumbfounded. Sound be great.
