Hi. I know many people have been asking about how to do the famous
double picking, but still I want to ask this. I can do it, but if I go
as fast as I can, my muscles start to ake because my arm is tense. how
can I play relaxed?
Thanx

Don't play fast and try to relax; keep your arm relaxed and then speed up
without tensing up.
"The key to speed is being relaxed." I can't remember if I heard that from
Ravi Shankar or Roy Buchanan. I always get those two confused. :)

God, don't we have anything better to do?
Hi,
Yep, building the speed up slowly is the key. I adjusted my hand
position as well.
First don't press the pick between your thumb and finger, but hold it
gently, so it can move, and you can control it. It will slip out of your
hands at first, probably numerous times, but after a while you will
control it.
Use both your wrist and arm for the movement and build up slowly. Don't
play tense but relaxed, it you play tense, your muscles will ake.
Also try a number of different picks, until you find one that works best
for you. Some like thick pics, while other prefer thinner more flexable
picks. After a while you can double pick with almost every pick, since
then you control the movement.
I found DD songs good to learn the double picking technique, first to
gradually build up the speed (since you will be using most the low and
high E (miserilou/Hava Nagila), which allow you more movement of the
pick and are easier to speed up) second because of the different
aproaches he makes while double picking. It is that rythmic movement as
well. (I developed a great intrest in Klezmer music and ethnic
(spanish/gipsy) music and middle Eastern music as most of these
techniques/progressions were developed from there)
Then gradually move to the A and D strings, without interfering the
other stings. Not easy at the biginning.
There are also very subltle "double" picking movements in songs by the
Shadows and the Ventures, where both subtility and the right speed are
essential to recreate the right tone (I'm not pointing at delay/echo,
but merely at the feel of these songs/compositions)
Double picking is more rythmic technique then a full speed/full throthle
technique (IMHO). (hence the subtilities used by the
Ventures/Shadows/Slacktone/The Nebulas, and all other instro-surf bands)
I also found that typical metal music progressions are very usefull for
double picking. There are numerous examples of how double (power) chord
picking and soloing is used in metal and (hard)rock music
AC/DC,Metallica (their older stuff is really fast, with lots of
galloping and schreding double picking). All usefull (IMHO) (there are
ofcourse more bands)
Hope this helps (a bit)

We had a good discussion about this at least once before, you might search
the archives.
One thing that surprised me about it was that most people use their whole
arm (and wrist), whereas I was just using my wrist. I now find that if I am
going to have any endurance at all I need to use my arm, at least a little
bit, in conjunction with my wrist.

the trick is to breathe through your eyeballs, like a Gila Monster.
Then, just chill...really. Actually, double picking is a muscular
knowledge thing, as opposed to a mental knowledge thing. When did you
ever overwork your muscles without "feeling the burn". The secret to
muscular knowledge is repetition and practice, until it just comes
naturally. Of course. You want your muscles conditioned, but not your
mind. Its a paradox. Repetition is good for the muscles, but bad for
your imagination.
