Hey all!
I went to the webpage of the company which makes the
Holy Grail reverb pedal (can't recall the name off-hand).
Anyway, there were plenty of samples, but I couldn't find
one which really articulate what I'm looking for--I'm looking
for a sample which demonstrates the metallic "splash" sound
which the old Fender reverb units produced
The demos just seemed like ordinary reverb to me. And the
"Flerb" was REALLY disappointing--it sounded just like
a regular flanger--nothing more, nothing less.
I'm getting old. . . .

Hiya, dude. I don't think there's a digital reverb unit made that can
give you what you want. That splash sound was created by the agitated
springs inside the old spring reverb units. It's entirely a result of
the analog nature of the spring reverb effect, and not something that
can really be done digitally. At least not that I've seen, so far.
What you'll want to do it hit ebay, and look for an old spring reverb
tank. I myself got an old Premier 90 Tube-drive unit (manuf. 1964) for
only $200... Much better price than antique fender gear. Works great,
too.
Sample:
It may take a week or so for something to crop up that you'll want to
bid on, but keep checking back. The old premier units seem to crop up
quite a bit.

Thanks for the sound sample, Cobalt - sounds great - nice n' wet!
Good tip on the Premier units, too . . . thanks!

Sounds really nice! BTW, I believe that Evan Foster used a Premier
reverb unit on the very early Boss Martians stuff, including their
great track "XKE" - and the guitar on that has a near perfect surf
tone. Check it out to hear a Premier unit in action.
