Tubular question...

obmosquito - 16 Aug 2003 16:29:33

Has anybody ever used the Groove Tube GT6L6 GE's ?
I noticed they sell matched quads at Musicians Friend for $139 which is
kinda pricy, but I wonder if they're worth it?

HI Paul,
If I remember correctly, I think Dave Wronski mentioned these tubes a
while ago on this list.
It seams they are made at the exact same way they use to make tubes back
in the early days. GT recreated the tools/machinery to produce these
tubes. Thus making them NOS but brand new?!
I'm sure someone can enlighten the GT6L6 GE's tubes a bit more.

I bought a pair of the 6L6GE tubes and I think they are excellent. I'm not a fan
of 6L6 tubes to begin with, mostly because of the booming 160hz freq., but these
are very good. When I took my 2-12 Slacktone amp to my #1 tech for his special
bias technique, I asked him to set my second {emergency} bias setting for the
GrooveTubes 6L6GE. I have a switch for two bias settings. One for the E34L JJ
which is what I use, and the other for 6L6 in case that's all I can find when
the others blow. When I told him the story of the Groovetube 6L6GE which uses
the actual, not re-created machines to make them{see them on the GT site in the
6L6GE section} he said he never cared for the old GEs because they tented to be
microphonic. After setting up my amp, he said the new 6L6GE were very good, with
a tone of surprize.
I think they are the way to go for a nice big sound. I like the TungSol 5881 for
tone a little bit more. But they will not give you as much power, and of course
you will have to hunt doun the 40+ year old tubes that also must be matched.
They came stock in my '62 Bassman, and I remember seeing them in a very early
Showman J. Blair has, but after that I think Fender used the RCA or GE6L6 for
everything.

How do you think the GT 6L6GE tubes compare with Svetlana's? My
amp(Carr) came with em, but I've been considering the new GT'6L6s for
some time now, jest haven't had a chance to taste test. I agree about
the TungSol 5881, but they are getting so scarce, now, and so expensive.

I haven't tried the Svetlana 6L6, but they are probaly OK. I'd choose them
before Sovtec or Chinese. I have a set of Svetlana EL34 and they sound good. I
need the extra headroom the E34L {JJ-Tesla} gives so I don't use them. They were
given to me by Victor at the PlexiPalace. The thing that stood out with the
6L6GE is that they have a very nice high freq. responce.

Other than the 6L6GE, which Groovetubes makes in California with the original GE
machines, all other tubes they sell are just re-branded Chinese, Russian, etc.
brands.

I've got Svet GEs, which replaced my original Groove Tubes. The Svets
have a rounder, fuller sound, less shrill but with a clear and
distinct high-end. I think they work very well, even when compared to
my GE/Jan 6L6s, which are about three times as costly.
But, when it comes to tubes, "better" is a matter of opinion. I like
my Svets quite well, tho.
Good luck,
Gavin
