Ian (skatalite_of_love) - 13 Aug 2003 16:10:41

I am new to this e-mail group but as of yet ive only heard of
vintage fender style amps and most likely gutiar too. Does any one
use other brands? Personaly i have a gretsch and i am saving up for a
phantom guitar works guitar.
And how do you find good old style amps, i have an ampeg with a
spring reverb but its solid state, i was wondering where to pick up
something in the tube catagory.

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 13 Aug 2003 20:11:18

Check out the "file" category of this list for info on Premier
amps...I am a big Premier nut now, having bought two amps, an 8-watt
Model 50 that screams vintage tone, and a big T-100 Rhythm amp with
twin 12" speakers (take a look in the photos section "My Rig" under
Gavin's Rig).
There's lots of other old tube amps...Alamo, Ampeg (check out the
Gemini), Magnatone (sometimes quite pricey, sometimes not), Selmer,
old Gibson models made by various amps companys, Danelectros, etc. I
like Premier because they are almost the same as comparable Fender
models at about one-third the cost. And, they have a retro 50s look
that is too cool for school.
Fender amps ruled early surf because back in the day, they were made
in California, the birth canal of 60s surf music, and became the
signature sound of surf. So, every generation after has coveted them.
They really do sound great and are widely available, despite high cost
for vintage gear. The newer reissues sound great too.
Otherwise, surf amps run against type: today, guitarists like amps
that really distory, while surf music is usually played plenty clean.
Any amp with good, clean headroom will work alright for surf.
Best advice: listen to as many amps as you can, and then pursue what
you want on Ebay or a local music shop. Be cautious - 40 and 50 year
old amps typically have many issues, and fixing them can cost as much
as their initial price.
Best o' luck,
Gavin "The Helldorados."

hey buddy, I realize the connection between fender and vintage surf, leo
fender in california and all the inovation in loud guitar foward music of
the time period. I was just wondering if all the people in the mailing list
were fender people. Personaly there is only one current fender that i would
by, and that would be the re-issue of the jazzmaster, or maybe the jaguar.
Thanks for you imput, the facts were interesting.

Another thing to lookout for is what kind of tubes the amp uses. Sounds like
you're new to the tube tone. I'll make a few gross but mostly accurate
generalizations that will help you in your quest.
Power tubes are the most important as far as tone signature goes. 50 years of
tube amp development has worked this out to two basic types for guitar amps
with 45 or more watts: 6L6 power tubes are for the Fender tone and EL34 power
tubes are for the Marshall sound. Depending on the rest of the circuit 2 6L6 or
EL34 power tubes means the amp puts out somewhere between 30-50 watts. 4
power tubes is about 80-100+ watts.
The standard preamp tubes for amps is the 12AX7. 12AT7, 12AU7,12AY7 and 7025
are all interchangeable with the 12AX7 but affect the tone because of
different gain characteristics. Fender and Marshall both use these tubes in
their
preamps. Which makes sense because the first Marshalls were clones of the 59
Bassman.
Ampeg, Gibson and Magnatone made some great amps but they tended to be a bit
eccentric in their choice of tubes most of which are still available but
harder to find than the "standard" tubes. Also with the standard tubes you can
choose from the various brands that are still being made in Eastern Europe and
China. Different manufacturers have different methods and qualities of
construction which affects the tone.
But like anything to do with music the most important tubes are the ones
between your ears and your brain.

I've got a Fender Cyber Twin and I've been very happy with it, very
versatile.
For Trad Surf I vote for a Showman however. Dave Mangiante of The
Woodies used a Fender Showman with a 2 x 15 cabinet but it was not
Fender. I swear that rig had some Mojo on it because even with the
same setup I could not get his tone.
I've heard some Fender Super Reverbs with 4x10's that sound really
great. But to be honest I like allot of amps, it just depends on what
I'm trying to do at that moment.
As for guitars I used to own a re-issue Jazzmaster, I'm now sorry I
ever sold it.

My 66 blackface dual showman with original twin 15" speakers is simply a
killer for tone and sound.
