Fender Bandmaster-Opinions

reverbmike1127 - 10 Aug 2003 13:41:33

Hi Gang
Back in the day a Bandmaster or Bassman was plenty of power for most
gigs. With the advent of new Technology and the fact that most bands I
hear today seem to be much louder than we were then, (to me anyway);
do these 40 to 50 watt amps still cut it in a live situation? No mics
now, just amp.
I'm currently using a Twin Reissue but am looking at purchasing an
original Bandmaster from a friend. Finances say that the Twin will
have to go to make this happen, and I have always loved the sound from
a closed back cab. All opinions and comments are most appreciated.

I used to have a blackface one, but it never did work out for me. Just
couldn't keep it clean enough for a real traditional sound. But, Pete's
main amp was a blond bandmaster. It sounded pretty much perfect for
most club sized gigs.
Coincidentally, I was just about to pull the trigger on a blond
bandmaster this week, but some car troubles set me back. I didn't
really need another amp, it was just too hard to pass up.

Hi Mike,
I got a 72 SF Bandmaster reverb and this thing is LOUD!! (I never go
past 4 on the volume...)
The sound is great, super clean and it's response on an outboard rverb
tank is very good.
IMHO a very underestemated amp. They are not as expensive as other
Fender amps, but sound just as good or even better.
I played on both the BF (pre and post CBS) and the early Silverface
(which I own) and the all sound fab)
I also tested it with a "64 Bassman cab (2x12) and Hmmmmm what a
sound....
Even for a 50 (45) watt amp it is very good. For me it had the tone I
was looking for and which I could afford.
I also like the rectiefer tube, I was a bit scared of it at first (would
I loose clean?) but it sounds very nice with a bit of breakup; just what
I need.
Some consider theSF BMR as sheite, but I like them a lot.
I hope it will stay alive for at least another 10 years or so...
Just my 2 cents,
Jerry S.

Thanks Jerry
I appreciate the input. I love my Twin, but remember my Bassman from long
ago (tears in eyes :)) Wish I could afford to do both, then this would be
easy.

I always used my 64 Bandmaster for surf, it’s just
“my” sound. I like the break-up. Even though the
Lively Ones have my favourite sound, and I think they
had single Showmans, I attribute the recording sound
more to Western Recorders studio and the engeneering.
The cleanliness of the Astronauts is a little too tame
for my taste. Even Dick Dale is breaking up his
Showman, because then it starts to sound loud, not
just being loud.
Having control over the negative feedback loop with a
little pot on the back, I can turn it gradually from
blackface disciplined behaviour to brownface
recklessness. I am very curious how the BM would sound
with alnico Jensens or Blue Bulldogs, but I currently
still have the J.F. Naylor ceramics, which supposedly
deliver the authentic 64 BM tone.
Volume past 8 is nice if you play a packed 100-200
people place. It compresses to a point were you are
still present when picking softer, with lots of
sparkle in the reverb. For live use I always connected
the two input channel, getting a more complex tone
control and and halfing the input from the guitar to
the pre-amp tubes, adding headroom and a hotter sound
from the output stage.

I've been working on a `64 bassman, and it's starting to sound pretty
good now. It had a tube rectifier in it when I acquired it, but I just
changed it to a solid state Weber rectifier. Now it's punchy and
louder, and definetely sounds good at rehearsal volume. I do like the
sound of the closed back cabinet too. It's a little bigger and more
work than my Twin Reverb, so that brings me to my next post, and the
reason why I joined the group this evening...
