Battle of the JBLs

Bill Bergstrom (surfbandbill) - 06 Aug 2003 19:12:59

Arright,
Now that I've landed that Dual Showman, it's time for me to get the
cabinet squared away. I'm presently bidding on an older Fender 2x15
cabinet, but the thing is, there is only one newer replacement
speaker in it.
So... if anyone out there knows where I can pick up a loaded Dual
Showman cab, or where I can get a good deal on some older JBLs to
stick in there, please let me know either on or off list.
With that, I've been checking on ebay and a few other sites around
about the speakers, and I wondered who can tell me the difference
between the JBL D130Fs and the D140Fs. It seems to be the general
consensus that the D140F is the preferred speaker, but why?
Mel? You seem to be the master of the Showman on this board...
Thanks to all,
~Bill~

Hi Bill...the D140F has a heavier voice coil and isn't as full range as the
D130F. The D130F is the more usual speaker for guitar, with a wider
frequency response compared to the D140F (which more bass players liked).
They were both offered for the Showman. My 2x15" cabinet came with one of
each!
I learned a great deal from this link:
If you can believe the internet, these words come from guy who invented the
speakers!
I watched Ebay for a while and these vintage speakers can get VERY expensive
if in good shape! Recones will be less.
BTW, if you need to recone or repair, I recommend Ted Weber at Weber VST:
Good luck,
BN

Like Brian said, the D140F is the bass speaker. Sounds very good for
guitar, too. Also, consider the 70s K130F and K140F speakers. The
E-series speakers uses a different magnet than the D and K speakers. When
you are looking at speakers, make sure that the ohm rating is what you want,
since the D-series at least was made in 4, 8, and 16 ohm impedances. The
first D130 I got was a 16 ohm model with a 8 ohm recone; cheaper than an
original cone with all the tone.
I also have heard very good things about Weber recones.

Harvey Gerst IS the guy that designed em. If you go to google groups
and search on his name you will find tons of threads he has
contributed to and offers quite a bit of knowledge, although, he is
not alone. The knowledge out there astonishes me.

Everyone,
Thanks so much for all your help thus far! I had toyed with the idea
of putting one of each in there, and after a lot of further study, I
think that's what I'll probably be doing.
Just to verify before I run out and pick everything up, the '67 Dual
Showman is rated at 4 ohms as I recall, so the two speakers should be
rated at 8 ohms a piece, correct?
I swear, this is why I became an English major, and left the
Electrical Engineering to my Dad...
A huge thanks again to all,
~Bill~

Hi Bill, yes...provided your run the speakers in parallel (which is
the usual way to do it).

Thanks Brian... I just picked up a D130 (no "F") on ebay for $103,
and the seller says while it's marked 16 ohm, it puts out like an 8
ohm speaker. (it measures 6.4 ohm dc).
Within 24 hours I should be able to land both the cabinet and the
D140F to complete the beast. Then it's just a matter of sitting down
and brining it to life.
Any pointers on anything else I should knwo at this point?
Giddily hogging all the posts,
~Bill~
