Turntable owners unite!

-=Dan Ware=- (reverbtank2002) - 29 Jul 2003 07:47:49

Hey,
What's everyone's take on vinyl these days? Who actually owns and
purchases vinyl here on the list? Do y'all actually crank up the turntable
and listen to your albums, or do you just buy it for the uniqueness and
basic collectibility? (like I do, since the bass player has my turntable)
I appreciate everyones 2 cents.

I purchase vinyl on a fairly regular basis. If
there's something I want that I happen to find in
vinyl first, I'll go ahead and buy it. I have an old
Panasonic stereo (with dual tape deck, oohhhh) that my
dad purchased back in '82 (I was three years old) that
spun all their old vinyl pretty regularly for a little
while. When we moved it got stored, and I dragged it
out my senior year of high school after I'd gotten a
piece of vinyl at a show (The Lillingtons) because
they were out of CD's. Sure enough, it worked. I
took it with me when I left home, and I've been
collecting vinyl every since. I recently picked up
Southern Culture on The Skids on vinyl, The Krontjong
Devils "On Tour" vinyl...actually, I spend way too
much money on albums, period.

DANO!
Vinyl...ahhh! The scratches, the static, the wonderful silky depth of
tone. I had a big ol' collection of it from high school two decades
ago — something like 200 albums. When I got divorced, it was all I
asked for, but my ex wife (that bitch) insisted on keeping them. MY
ALBUMS! I'm sure she tossed them.
Needless to say, I've never recovered my vinyl-buying collection. But
I did buy a bunch of acetate (yet, with the hard varnish) collection
at a garage sale. These were from the 1940s, and they don't have the
nice smoothness of vinyl, but a harsh hard sound. I never listen to
them...the musical era was before my time, and it is nearly impossible
to find 78 speed turntables.
I miss big album covers, but don't miss my albums when it comes time
to move to a new place. I don't really have a problem with CDs, but
they skip and get funky just like albums used to and my CD players are
always breaking and screwing up.
That's my cents.
Anyway,

Dude,
Vinyl is the root of all things surf.
I have the mandatory milk-crate full off LPs that they will
have to pry from my cold dying hands.
I purchased a really cool AIWA turntable to plug into the
back (the AUX inputs) of my AIWA Boombox CD/Cassette
player...it is no audiophile turntable, but it still sounds
bitchen'. ( www.aiwa.com ) I have my turntable on the shelf
and I crank up "Surfer's Choice" or "The Ventures a'Go-Go"
often.
I love old wacky thrift shop vinyl, I love old
almost-out-of-business record shops. The Salvation Army
and St. Vincent d'Paul is cool with me. I love goin' to
grandma's house and diggin' through her Desi Arnaz
collection. Vinyl is here to stay,...even my daughter
knows what a "record album" is...but, her friends don't!
Vinyl...it's not just for dj's anymore!

I recently became vinyl (re)enabled - last winter I pulled the old
Technics SL-D202 out of the attic and got a new cartridge for it. I
guess the main reason was so that I could transfer some of my old
vinyl to CD (it's hard to fit those LPs into the car CD player).
A secondary motivation was so that I could get some of those cool
releases that aren't available on CD (and yes, I put them on CD so I
can listen to them in the car . . . ). And for you vinyl purists
out there, I don't clean up the scratches and pops (I try to, but it
just doesn't seem to work for me - hehehe).
I run the old turntable through my equally ancient Pioneer SX-5
receiver into the sound card. The audiophile crowd swears by tube
audio amps - I have no reason to doubt that they bring a little more
warmth to the vinyl than the solid state stuff I have. Hmmm . . . I
do have a little homebrew tube audio amp sitting in my basement that
my Grandfather-In-Law used to use to play his jazz piano records -
I've got to give that a try someday!
Anyone out there using tube amplification with their vinyl?
-Dick

My record collection isn't huge, about a milk-crate full. Just the
other day I found the ventures christmas album, and the ventures
play the carpenters at the used book store. At the risk of sounding
like a Mr. Show skit, I love hearing the pops, scratches, but
overall depth of records.

I don't buy vinyl any more. Seldom seen here. But I _do_ have a turntable
and a lot of cool records that I still listen to.
