what's with "Dual"

Bill Bergstrom (surfbandbill) - 29 Jul 2003 05:21:24

Okay, I know this topic has been breached on here before, but plain
and simple, I'm too lazy and my dial-up is too slow for me to go back
and search, but I was wondering what the key differences were between
Showman amps and Dual Showman amps?
The reason I ask is that there is a '67 Dual Showman listed on Ebay
right now, and the guy is offering local (SF Bay Area) sale which
could cancel the auction. It looks to be at a very competitive
price, so my interest is definitely peaked.
What is a good deal on a piece of equipment like this? Keep in mind,
it's just the head, no cab, and it does not have the Vibrato
footswitch (although the vibrato is supposed to be in good working
order).
Thanks,
~Bill~

Hi Dual has to do with the wattage, if I'm correct?
Duall Showman 100 Watt and 4 pwer tubes and Showman 50 Watt 2 power
tubes???
Correct me if I'm wrong.... But Blackface Dual Showman is still
considered to be the "King" of surf amps....
Be preparedto do some work on the amp...new cabs probably and perhaps
new tubes. If the the amp is still in origanal condition it's a good
thing, many were modified over the years to become more screaming
beasts....instead of getting a Marshall.
So lots of power...But coupled up with a JBL equiped Dual Showman
cab.....Aaaahhhhhh...surf heaven.....ad the reverb unit and bucle up for
a journey to the stars...

Sorry got it wrong...showman 85 watt output, 4x 6L6 power tubes...Dual
was added in '64 to the amp. And Dual stand for twin 2x 12 inch of 13"
while showman came with only one speaker 12" or 13" (15" was also
possible)

Phil Kucer (surfbass7) - 29 Jul 2003 07:04:45

From a post on the Fender Forum ():
The major difference is the "SHOWMAN" has a 125A30A (8 Ohm) output
transformer intended for a single 8 Ohm speaker. The "DUAL SHOWMAN" had
the 125A29A (4 Ohm) output transformer intended for two 8 Ohm speakers
wired for a total of 4 Ohms.
Also, the "SHOWMAN" had a very slight change in the phase inverter,
using a 47 Ohm resistor to ground, as oppoesed to the 100 Ohm resistor
of the "DUAL SHOWMAN".
According to The Fender Field Guide (), The
Blonde Showmans are 100 watts while the Black & Silverface ones are 85.

rock verb (mono_tones_1) - 29 Jul 2003 07:28:08

to add a little to Jerry's triple showman post, the dual has a different
output transformer, built to work with 4 ohms speakerload, while the
'single' showman is built to work with 8 ohm speakerload.
the amp doesn't actually see the amount of speakers, it just sees
resistance. Since Fender used all 8 ohm speakers, 4 ohms resembles two 8 ohm
speakers in parallel, 8 ohms is just the one speaker, also, having more
speakerresistance then indicated is not a problem; you might loose a little
sound quality, but it's not bad for the amp.
In short, you can use this amp with a one-4-ohm speakercab, with a
two-8-ohm=4 ohm-speakercab, or if nothing else is available, with an 8ohm
cab.
you can compare 'prices paid' on harmony-central. Be sure to just compare
the blackface dual showmans, the silverface are worth (considrably) less. be
prepared to spend dollars on tubes. Also, be prepared to have it serviced
and possibly it needs some new parts in the near future.
having said that.... i looked up the amp on e-bay, and if the add is
correct, that is one killer amp.

Guys,
Thanks so much for all the help and guidance.
The guy offered me $500 (probably plus tax)
I'd probably be willing to take him up on it, assuming it can at
least put out some signal, and would work alright with the single 15"
cab. I just appreciate that cab so much more.
Naturally, I'd still need to track down a cab, make sure it has a
Jensen D130F in it, and I'll probably re-tube it (unless that's been
done recently).
Does this sound like a good deal? Or should I play it cool for a
little longer and see if something pops up?

Hi Bill,
If it's close to where you live, go give it a try. For me personally I
like to try gear out.
If you like a the Dual Showman and it feels right while playing get it,
if you don't like it don't buy.
If your 15" cab falls within the speaker load of the Showman, I guess
you can judge the amp on that. But as Brain once wrote, a showman really
comes to live when coupled on a JBL D120 or 130 cab.... I heard it once,
and I must admit it's true. (You don't see a lot of BF Dual Showmans
here in Belgium ;-)
As for the price, I can't comment on that. I paid more for a fully
retubed SF Bandmaster Reverb, You can probably get them for less then
half of that in the U.S. So...
I wouldn't hasitate a second if I could get a BF showman for 500 $, but
I'm on the other end of the ocean and work on 220 V.
If you like it, get it.

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 29 Jul 2003 19:38:02

I bought a Dual Showman ('66) this year. 85 Watts with 2 x 15" speakers.
Like Phil said, the only difference between a Dual Showman and a Showman is
one resistor and the output transformer.
Fender was inconsistent about the faceplates though. Sometimes they said
"Dual Showman" on them and sometimes they just said "Showman" even though
they were technically Dual. Mine just says "Showman"
You need to check the output transformer code to be sure it is a Dual
Showman. Although some of them do indicate Dual Showman on the tube chart
(mine doesn't). I can look up the codes for you if you want.
The stock speakers used were JBL-D130F's or JBL-D140F's. These are 15"
speakers. I don't know where you got 13" Jerry, I've never heard of
that....?
I would be wary about running a Dual Showman through a single 8 Ohm speaker
load for very long....! My amp tech told me that I could do that, but only
if I pull 2 of the power tubes first (and yes it does matter which ones, but
I've forgotten which ones he said; I think it was the two outside ones BUT
DON'T QUOTE ME ON THAT).
$500 dollars is a good price I think if it is a black face. Make sure its
not a silver face (not that their bad, its just you can get those a little
cheaper maybe) or one of the early 1980's red knob Dual Showman. Be warned
though, you will want to get new tubes and have the electrolytic capacitors
replaced if they are original. This will add maybe $200 or more depending on
what tubes you get and who you have work on it.
Again, I'm talking about black face Showmans above. There are the earlier
blonde ones, then after the black face models came the CBS silver faces, and
then there were the red knob Showmans (not related at all really).
The Fender Field Guide is a great resource as is the Fender Forum for
learning about these things:
Having said all that....I am really knocked out with my Showman. It far
surpassed any expectations I had and continues to amaze me. I can't believe
that tone is coming from my guitar and hands! If I only had the chops to
match!
Good luck!!

Mel Waldorf (melwaldorf) - 29 Jul 2003 21:31:02

A Dual Showman should be fine with an 8 ohm load, with no modifications.
I've got a '67 Twin Reverb in a combo cab driving a 8 ohm 15" speaker (I've
used both a JBL K130 and a Rola? bass speaker). I've had it in this setup
for years with no problems. In fact, a 4 ohm rated head running an 8 ohm
load will have a reduced total output (probably in the range of 60-70W for a
DS) and a darker tone than with a 4 ohm load. Conversely, a 8 ohm rated
head running a 4 ohm load will run hotter than stock, and has a brighter
tone than with the expected load. Never go outside the half to two times
expected load range with a vintage Fender. I wouldn't count on amps from
other manufactures as being able to support anything but the expected load.
As for the tone ring cabinets, the tone ring suspends the speaker in the
center of the port. I never measured exactly, but I think the port on the
Showman cab is about 18" diameter. The bass response on these cabinets is
amazing, and the chrome dustcap on the JBL peeking through looks so cool!

Hi mel that's cool, I've a twin running a single 15" too.
Unfortunately though it's the 135 watt twin. I deultralinearized (sic!) it
though. A different league alltogether. It runs an 8ohm ALTEC 15" 150 watt
broadband PA speaker in a homemade cab (with chrome dustcap!). Not quite a
showman but as close as I can get with the little money I have, and it gives
good surf tone. I built a new cab for the twin head though, bassman specs.
can you give more info on what the tone ring does to the freqencies? I might
want to try it out sometimes.
btw, the 6l6's are grouped as follows the two outside pairs are parralelled,
and then the two pairs are paralelled with eachother. to have the amp
working half power/8ohms you have to
have one 6L6 of each outside pair. You can pull the two outside or the two
inside tubes.
I did this with my amp/speaker combination and as it turned out, it sounded
way better just with the 4 tubes driving the 8ohm speaker.
