[Sorry it's taken me a week to write this!]
It was a fine night to trip out to the Cadillac Lounge, a fine local
establishment here in Toronto. Ever since I became a born-again surfoholic,
I'd wanted to hear a surf band play locally. Told a local promoter to get
Dick Dale and he likes the idea but it hasn't happened yet....
This night, my first such indulgence happened, thanks to this excellent
list. A post from rio let me know that The Eradicators would be performing
and that's a Good Thing because the places where they list local events made
no mention whatever of the band. Sheesh! A little respect, if you please!
The promo'd band was Wheel House and they were a decent band, playing
popular tunes, and were well received. But, for me, The Eradicators were the
act to see. Not named on the bill. This needs fixing.
I arrived early and hooked up with rio almost immediately. He kept making
disparaging remarks about his playing and the band. IMO, none of it was
deserved. He'd said in his email that he played badly and that the band were
marginal and so forth. I don't know why. No one would've suspected that they
didn't perform every night! Heck, they've even done some movie soundtrack
work! Who asks a bad band to do their movie?
It was exactly what I was looking for and was well executed to boot. I
didn't see anybody flub anything. Quite the contrary. I was well pleased
with the set and will happily go see them again anytime. I had a lot of fun!
Dave the bass player said of rio, "He's DA MAN!" So I got both ends of the
hype scale. :D I'll just add that I was particularly impressed with the
silky touch on the whammy. (I admit to having serious whammy envy all the
time but rio's got the touch. Lovely shimmer for stuff like Pacifica.)
So, once they'd beaten the girls off with a stick ;) they got up and did
their stuff. I recognized 5 of the tunes and knew I knew a sixth but
couldn't come up with the name (Besame Mucho, as it turns out). I'd expected
to recognize more but I hadn't realized just how many original tunes the
band has. But no problem, familiarity isn't a requirement. They played 18
tunes and I enjoyed the whole show, although maybe not as much as the blonde
who was hooting after every number. At the end of the set, she did a "we're
not worthy" bow-down while Dave's wife presented him with a rose. A nice end
to a nice show. Looking forward to more.

Anyway, thanks for coming out last Friday, we all had a blast. I'll
keep you posted re more gigs in future, I suspect we should be back
to Cadillac Lounge some time soon, but my man sam is a hard guy to
get hold of...
