A question for the guitar players.....
I would like to be able to control the amount of overdrive/fuzz via
a volume pedal. The idea is to be able to add or subtract
distortion while I'm playing. Listening to some of the older r&b and
rock n roll sax, those guys often go to the dirty tone whenever they
want, and to whatever degree they want.
So how can I route the signal path in order to do this? Thanks.

Put the volume pedal before the OD/Dis. Another option is to use the
guitar's volume control insted of the pedal.
Mike
the volume pedal works real nice directly after the guitar
before any effects or pramplicication. I remember watching
Roy Buchanan work his Telecater volume in the manner you
are mentioning. He was a real master of natural Fender amp
distortion. He would control his input volume using his
pinkie finger on the guitar volume knob. Man, he had the
perfect touch.
I play bass, but I use a volume pedal in line like this:
bass> tuner>volume pedal> blue tube pre-amp> fender bassman
I can turn down the volume to tune on-stage...and I can
make an almost bow-like attack/volume swell...
you know an almost fretless sounding "bwaaa bwaaa bwaaa"
sort of bass tone.
well, anyway
good luck,

Which Bassman do you have?
Phil
---------------------------------------------
Phil Tiki
The Cocktail Preachers
I have the 1965 Bassman 50 (2X6L6 GE power tubes) into a
1966 4X12 Celestion Fender Cabinet. It has enough power
for smaller indoor gigs... for larger halls andd outdoors I
split signal bi-amp and add my old Sunn 300. I run a weird
Sunn combo cabnet 1X12 EV and 1X15 EV.
When I biamp, I run most of the trebles and mids to the
Fender, and most of the mid-bass end to the Sunn.
Sometimes, instead of lugging all that crap around, I will
simply mike the Fender and run two signals to the board...
I use a direct box splitter and send one signal line to the
Fender, and use the direct line straight into the board.
That way I get the nice full Fender Bass sound, but I also
get a crisp attack whether I use a pick or my fingers.
Also, the direct house sound remains "distortion free"
while the miked Fender adds a lot of nice tone color.
man, that was a long winded answer to a really short
inquiry...
good luck,

Don't you find that the Bassman distorts too easily? I've been toying
around with my 64 Showman and it sounds like a bass into a guitar amp.
All highs & mids. No lows and really distorted. Yuck.
Phil
Please don't take this as a wise guy answer - why don't you do it like
the old R&B guys?
Get an amp that distorts the way you want at the volume you want -
this could be anything from a champ to a twin depending upon the
venues you play at - You want the volume to be at around 6 (and try
the old 6-6-6 volume-bass-treble). then use your guitar volume to
clean up the tone for comping.
Here are two rigs I use to nail that tone:
Guild X-175 with soapbars into a brown Fender Concert
Guild DE-400 with DeArmonds into an Ampeg Reveberocket.
I predict you will dump all your pedals once you get the the "right"
rig.
Boulder Bob
P.S. If you're concerned about the prices of vintage Fender amps
(keep in mind that most Silverface Fenders are still great values),
check out 60's Ampegs. The Gemini series will give you that 60's R&B
tone and are very good values. stay away from those evil humbuckers
and use at least .011's!
Well..the Bassman does distort above about 7 on the
volume...It actually kind of "breaks up" a bit and gets a
little like mild "fuzz face" sounding.
I had a Showman, and that was real nice for guitar, it too
began distorting about 6/7 volume. I liked that sound...
When using the Bassman50 in a live situation, I rarely go
much past 6 on the volume knob...actually my typical
setting is 6 straight across (6 vol, 6 bass, 6 treb) and I
usually play with my "deep" switch in the "off" position.
I like Fender's "deep" circuit, but mainly for recording,
not for performing.
I like that John Enwistle sort of rumble and twang, so a
little bass distortion is exactly what I am after...but I
mostly get my distortion and "mid-bass boost" from my blue
tube pre-amp.
You are correct though...a too loud Fender bassman50 makes
for crappy bass tone...
Oddly enough, the bassman serves better as a guitar amp
than a bass amp...I use mine often for rhythm guitar.
I love the way the guitar sound through the bassman50, and
the old fender reverb unit sounds great through the bassman
circuit. I even use the bass channel for guitar, rather
that the "bright" channel...
it has a terrific full-bodied rythm guitar tone.
the best bass amps in my opinion are the Ampeg, the Sunn
and the Mesa Boogie 400-600 watt all-tube models...they
sound great, they weigh a ton, and they cost mega $$$...
I like the fender bassman for its simplicity, its authentic
"1965" tone, and for its affordability.
I also like the way it smells after I run it for an hour or
so...

Right on Bob!
I like your reply... a miked Champ is a tone monster...
I liked the old Fender Quad reverb amp...it was a
silverface model that "broke up" at about 4/5 volume
level...at 6 you could pull of Pete Townshend style
"singing distortion" riffs...
I also liked the little 22 watt Fender Princetons and
Fender Reverb combo amps...two more cool and affordable
silverface gems.

My early 60s Vibrasonic gets that smell too. The tone is best after
being on for an hour too.
Mike
that smell is the best part!
