Re: [SurfGuitar101] Digest Number 82

Bubba Gump (brother_reynolds) - 15 Feb 2002 02:21:50

****You know, I think I may have actually seen it - or
may even have it on
tape! I have to check. The problem of course is that
the touring
Hondells (which appear in the movie) were a much
different band than
the
recording Hondells. Richie Podolor, Hal Blaine, etc.
- how do you
substite for these guys?? But they do have the
clean-cut, frat look,
so
well emulated by many modern surf bands - probably by
the old Boss
Martians the best. And, of course, great looking
guitars!****
The Hondells were just plain cool. I love their
vocals, no matter if it is Mike Curb singing or if it
is Dick Reynolds. And the Hondells in the movie
toured the Usher and the Curb songs. But, yeah, the
frat sweaters, the hunched over guitar stance. All
too much cool for one sitting.
****Is this the ATM series? I have Vol. 4. Which one
is this track on?****
"The Gasser" is on Vol. 2, which also includes an
unreleased early version called "The Greaser." Don't
know why it was changed, but I'm glad it ultimately
was. The only greaser allowed in the Hondells
catalogue is the guy with the "Mean Streak."
****Yep. The second Hondells album instros were all
his, and they're
great. I even thought that Podolor was playing on
some of them, but
now
know that not to be the case. Still, the quality was
that high.****
Curb did some of the vocal songs with the Hondells
name as well. "Little Sidewalk Surfin' Girl" is the
best example. Pure genius.
For most of Curb's Teen Rebellion soundtracks, he just
used Davie Allan, or Davie with his Arrows groups.
However, in 1964, he was using Billy Strange and Davie
Allan together for the Hondells recordings. Like I
said, I love the Usher Hondells stuff, with the use of
Podolor, just about as much as anything in my Surf
collection. But I think Curb's Hondells material,
with the use of Strange and Allan, had just as much
gravy going for it as Usher's did, any day of the
week. Some people just can't see the forest from the
trees. No need to de-emphasize Curb any longer.
****My bad. I was thinking of the third Superstocks
album, not the
Hondells. There is no third Hondells album.
Sorry.****
That's okay. You just had me kind of excited at the
thought of it. Those Superstocks albums are utterly
amazing. SURF ROUTE 101 was reputedly one of the
Del-Tones favorite LPs in the early '60s. I have it
on word from several of the Harmony Park Ballroom
regulars that Dick and gang used to spin that record
quite often. I have them all except THUNDER ROAD. I
have it on CD, but I haven't been able to put my hands
on an original LP.
Some day.... some way.
