Definitive surf song? Thoughts from the list...

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 17 Jul 2003 10:46:09

I was just listening to Los Straitjackers version of "Calhoun Surf"
and thought to myself, "this is the definitive surf song." It has it
all: the surf beat, drenching reverb, warbling whammy-bar cords, a
simple but well-constructed melody of ascending and descending
single-note riffs, a two-string bass structure underneath, and it's
under two minutes.
Anyone wanna suggest some other "definitive" surf songs? (You may not
include "Pipeline," the daddy of 'em all in my view.)
Creativity in your choice will earn you bonus points.

It's not really a surf song but I first heard it (many times!) on a Live365
surf channel.
Our Favorite Martian - Bobby Fuller Four
Just really one of my very fave instros.
A REAL surf song that I really like...
Surf Beat - Dick Dale
At that time, they didn't make guitars to sound good; they just made them to
work. But Dick is WAY WAY PHAT!!! If I'd walked into a place in 1964 and
heard that I'd've been SCARED! :D

well..."Pipeline" and "Wayward Nile" by the Chantays are
sort of...
Hmmmm..."definitive" that's a toughie...
but, they define surf music for me...
(a few more: "Miserlou", "Squad Car","The Wedge","Diamond
Head", "Mr. Moto"...Dang...I could go on all day)
Okay, Okay... I choose..."Pipeline" that's the one!

Oh man so many killer songs from the first wave.
Of course Baja has been played a zillion times by many
bands. But When you hear that chugging, chunking, dripping
rhythm and Bass part of the Original played real loud on
a good stereo system. You can almost imagine yourself in
that RCA recording studio.
a Couple others I have really come to love is
Bulwinkle pt.2 by the Centurions
and Latinia, who did that origianly? I thought it was the
Revels, but it's not on the cd. But it is on the Original
Surfaris(Bombora,and Surfari fame).
Too much info, when I learn more the old stuff gets shoved
out the back door.

-Duh,
Thanks Gavin. I can't believe I forgot that one.
Weren't both of those bands from the Central Calif. area
around Santa Barbara area? If so maybe that's why I mixed
them up.
