Brian,
Number one: you guys rule. To travel long distances for surf...yourself,
Dick..Sarah and her husband from Tennessee. THAT earns respect in my eyes.
Knowing that there are people out there who LOVE this music makes it that
much more fun to play, and thats what it's about. Dick, Brian, Sarah, Tom
and anyone else out there on the list who made it out to one of the
shows...thank you. We hope you'll have us back again one day.
I think its so cool meeting y'all in person.

Finally getting around to piping in meself... First of all, thanks
to everyone with all the nice words and compliments about the show
and the Troubadours. Must wholeheartedly agree with Dan-o, second of
all. People like Brian, Dick and Sarah make it all worthwhile.
Seeing somebody digging the music so much makes us want to play it
even more. I really enjoyed seeing Brian again, and meeting Dick -
but Sarah, what happened? I thought somebody was coming from
Tennessee (that's you, right?), but you failed to come introduce
yourself.
Third, some impressions of the show. Had a BLAST!!!! I was just
emailing Spanky of the Penetrators and it occured to me that I
haven't felt this much camraderie at a show since the last Space
Cossacks/Penetrators gig in Baltimore in the summer of '98 (I can't
even believe it's been five years since then... damn...). It was
fantastic talking with the Nebulas and we got on absolutely great.
These guys rule. Not only are they incredible players with matching
songwriting skills, they're all really nice and down-to-earth guys,
every single one of them. It was a real honor to share the stage
with them. And speaking of that, in that 10 minutes i think I had
more fun than over the last six months put together!! I was giddy
afterwards, I just couldn't stop giggling! Amazing. Those guys
certainly didn't need my help to blow the people away - they
definitely blew me away! Think about how good they sound on CD, and
then multiply that by about 3 or 4, and you'll get an idea how good
they sound live. All the people I talked with aftewards were
commenting on some aspect of the Nebulas performance. Their sound
was huge, but completely devoid of the 'icepick' element that a lot
of heavy-reverb-and-Showman-using surf bands have. These guys
understand tone. Mucho energy, too. I was very impressed with the
new tracks, which I think are as strong or even stronger than the
originals on their first album. This bodes very well. Guys, we'll
play with you anytime! (I'm just listening to their brand-spanking-
new live CD released by Double Crown Records, recorded by Phil Dirt,
and it is a REQUIRED purchase for any real surf music fan - it's as
good as their first CD.)
Destination: Earth! put on a fantastic show, as well. I must have
seen them almost a dozen times by now, and I think this was the best
they'd ever been. Though in general I don't like three-piece bands,
D:E! pull it off somehow. Since they're not a trad band, they have
very busy drums, a louder, more distorted bass, and a more distorted
lead guitar. It doesn't hurt that all three of them are really great
musicians. That was the thing that really stood out on Saturday -
their sheer musical abilities. Great fun. One half of the Nebulas
and two-thirds of the Troubadours didn't see the first half of the
D:E! set cause we were packing up and chatting outside the back door,
but we could still hear it, and it sounded big and full and lively.
When we finally went in to watch it, it got even better. Great job,
guys!
Finally, the Troubadours did alright. I had a brainfart (fingerfart?)
right outta the gate, which bites the big one! But with that behind
me, we had fun, though we were sloppy at moments. This was our first
performance in almost 11 months, and you can practice til you're blue
in the face, but nothing can prepare you for and/or take the place of
playing live. It's the actual playing that gives you the confidence
and that exposes the weak spots which you can then hone. That's what
we missed. But we have three other performances over the next two
months, so I'm looking forward to shaking off the dust.
Anyway, Rip's spirit was there amidst all the love of the twang
and 'booch-booch' (yes, there were two 'booches' for each reverb-unit
wielding guitarist, which included me when I got up there with the
Nebs). We had our own tribute to Rip's memory and his continued
influence on modern surf music. You'll always be with us, compadre.
Great time was had by all. I really hope we can do it again next
year.

Well again (I can't let this die), thank you guys for hauling your asses all
over the Midwest just for a handful of shows. Thanks for the great music and
showing us how its done (to all 3 bands).
BTW, I don't think Sarah is on this list, maybe its Reverborama. But I have
emailed her, she was the one who tried to buy us drinks. Both she and her
husband are very enthusiastic about surf music as well. And I think they
drove up from Tennessee!!

Man, could you imagine going to one of those goofy car
audio places with your decked out Nebulas Edition
Navigator? "You don't UNDERSTAND dude, I need more

Yeah, good times can never be understated - I think Sarah is only on the C-list
(C for Cowabunga of course) and maybe the R-list (sorry, no clever double
entendre here), but she is shy and an admitted fan of barley, malt and/or
spirits as her review of the Chicago show would indicate.
Still, I think we're all very very approachable as people - its not like we have
an entourage of troglodite security folk like P-Diddy, all wearing Nebulas-brand
sweat pants and driving custom TFJ-adorned Lincoln Navigators or anything.
Still, if someone buys me a beer, I always like to thank them in person. Ahh, it
wasn't the beer that killed me, it was the birthday shots of Cuervo I kept
buying myself (okay, I only had two).
But if the guy wearing dark socks and shorts can shell out enough coinage from
his change purse to cover the local bus fare to the gig, anyone can come say
"hi" to a bunch of out-of-twon surf geeks.
In fact, last night I saw a special on Lou Dobbs' Moneyline on how unsafe
15-passenger vans are, and how prone they are to rollovers. Oh well, I guess
that's why I flew home - saved everyone else from having me drive anymore.

Sorry for my late response, but I've been out of town on business
since Wednesday and haven't had a chance to check e-mail . . . now
I'm stuck at O'Hare airport until 12:30 AM - but at least I have
Internet access!
Anyway, *Sarah* is the person who wanted to buy us drinks? If I had
known that, I would have accepted . . . at the time, I was too
frightened to look back and see who it was. I was worried it was one
of the Zanies Too house dancers, so I passed on the drinks - didn't
want to be indebted, if you know what I mean. Yikes!
