Little Lanilei vs. Dano Spring King

Richard (errant_jedi) - 12 Jul 2003 14:41:30

Has anybody had a chance to A/B these two products? I
sold my EH Holy Grail a while back to buy a Premier
tank, which I turned around and sold to Gavin when I
hit hard times. My guitarist is going to hand the six
string to me when we do our surf tunes, so I need
something that'll do in a pinch. The Little Lanilei
is relatively expensive and the Spring King's can be
had for pretty good prices on eBay. I know the Holy
Grail sounds pretty good for the money. Does anybody
have any opinions?

Hi,
I don't like the spring king. It sure sounds nice, but the spring in the
unit starts to resonate when put on "wet reverb" this is very anoying.
Although you can kick and it gives the "chrash" spring sound.
IMHO the Holy Grail is much better. Also because it comes with an AC
adapter, the spring king doesn't and using that thing with a 9 V
battery...I don't think so. As it eats batteries like my Danelectro tuna
melt...
The Spring king is huge compared to the Holy grail, given the fact it is
a Pedal.
I also find that the "spring" sound of the Spring king is to nasal
compared with the Holy grail.
I haven't tried the Little Lanay yet, but I guess it will be better then
the Spring King.
I think the Spring king is good for Home, Kitchen and Garden playing (as
we call it) but on higher volumes the resonation of the device,
resulting in a metalic sounding feedback makes it not very suited for
band practising. (IMHO)
I tested the unit in a shop with a strat on a Fender Tube amp and tried
all modes and these were my findings.
Ofcourse this is my own opinion.
Kind regards,
Jerry S.

I tried a Little Lanilei - very good reverb, for what it is. It comes
close to true tube tone, but as you know it's nearly as expensive as a
used tube unit (like the wonderful Premier you sold me). But the
reliability might be an issue - the tech was trying to repair a broken
Little Lanilei the same day I looked at one. Hmmm...
I think the Premier you sold me is about the sweetest reverb I've
heard - I prefer it to my ol' '63 Fender Reverb reissue, in fact. So,
you might want to hunt around for another one. In the meantime, does
your amp have reverb? My Fender Hot Rod Deluxe gets pretty good reverb
without having to use anything else. In a stage setting, it might be
enough.
Watching out for your financial health,
Gavin

Thank you once again Gavin. I noticed that finding
the Little Lanilei's used wasn't easy and that they
run about $200 new and not much less used since
they're not very common. So my best option value-wise
probably would be another Premier. I just can't
really go that high on it. My solution will probably
be another Holy Grail pedal unless I decide to just
wait on it. The amp that we're using is a Peavy
acoustic amplifier (we're both near broke, and I've
spent most of my money on bass stuff, so...) which
sounds pretty good considering all the stuff we're
putting it through.
So you're still digging the Premier, huh? I'd like to
hear the Premier/Premier combo one day if you ever
decide to record anything. Wish I coulda kept it, but
I have the comfort of knowing it went to an
appreciative buyer.

I hope to make a sound file one day soon...more as a way of telling
everyone "thanks" for helping me along as I've been learning this last
year and a half. I owe a lot to everyone who frequents this site, both
for their encouragement of a grom surf guitarist, and for all the
advice on equipment (forever indebted...literally).
