Re: [SurfGuitar101] Digest Number 81

Bubba Gump (brother_reynolds) - 14 Feb 2002 01:13:56

Ivan,
"The Gasser" is available on the movie "Ski Party,"
which you get to see the Hondells in all their 1965
God-like stature. It is also avaiable on the 4CD
Hondells CD set that came out a few years back. The
notes were done by Stephen McParland. They are pretty
informative, with a "just the facts" approach, though
I think he totally misses it on Mike Curb.
Curb did half of the Hondells' recorded output, as
producer, and his stuff, especially songs like "Little
Sidewalk Surfin' Girl" and "The Rebel Without A Cause"
were just as good as anything Usher did with the
Hondells.
The reason people don't give Curb the credit he
deserves, as a producer and songwriter is because most
of his stuff was highly exploitative of various genres
(so most assume it must suck), and the fact that he
was a Capitalist, and often a svengali prick. That
said, his music was still great -- highly melodic and
dense, with great vocals, and the coolest guitar sound
(from Billy Strange and Davie Allen -- what a team).
In your original post you said you had a "Third"
Hondells LP at your house, but you were at work, so
you couldn't check it to see if "The Gasser" was on
it. I have the first two Hondells LPs, but I was not
aware that there was even a third. I thought they
only did two albums. What was their third album
called? When was it released?
Hang 10!

You know, I think I may have actually seen it - or may even have it on
tape! I have to check. The problem of course is that the touring
Hondells (which appear in the movie) were a much different band than the
recording Hondells. Richie Podolor, Hal Blaine, etc. - how do you
substite for these guys?? But they do have the clean-cut, frat look, so
well emulated by many modern surf bands - probably by the old Boss
Martians the best. And, of course, great looking guitars!

Is this the ATM series? I have Vol. 4. Which one is this track on?

Yep. The second Hondells album instros were all his, and they're
great. I even thought that Podolor was playing on some of them, but now
know that not to be the case. Still, the quality was that high.

My bad. I was thinking of the third Superstocks album, not the
Hondells. There is no third Hondells album. Sorry.
