Hey I noticed Dave posted his photo; its in the photo area of this
group at the top level titled "New Guitar Idea".
Please walk us through it Dave...? Strat body + Jag mute + Jag or
Mustang bridge + Jag trem? What about pickups? Jag & humbucker?
Whats the scale length?
Thanks for posting that!
BN
Well, something mst have happened to my original post. The guitar in the picture
is one of two made by the same Master Builder{Fender Custom Shop}, that made the
surf Jag seen at the NAMM Show. He decided to try my idea of a Strat body with a
Jag neck& scale{24"}, with a Jag/Jazz tailpiece and bridge. More pronounced neck
angle for better string pressure against the saddles. He made two. This one{in
"photos" section} is a Relic, ash body, '59 humbucker at bridge{Japanese dealers
$uggestion}. His other is silver sparkle.
Mine is being made now, and will be blue sparkle{large flakes}, and have two Jag
p/ups. I'm trying to fix a '63 Jag neck to put on this body. My switch will be
in a different place, or the switching will be done with Bill Turner's new
combination Knob/switch that will be on a new series of guitars from Fender
called, "Stealth". The knobs look like the old Strat, J-bass, Telle, but the
tops of the knobs can be push in for swithching functions-very cool!
Anyway, I hope to bring the new guitar to Europe if it turns out OK.
Gotta go now; gig at the Huntington Beach Pier with PolloDel Mar{who were great
the other night at the Lava Lounge, in Hollywood}, and the Eliminators,, a
couple other bands, too.

FWIW, I just saw in Guitar Player that someone sells such a neck for a
Strat. That and a longer scale one. Just bolt on, no other changes.

My tour diary:
I have not seen the neck you're talking about, but I can't see how the scale
could be correct. If you look at the picture I posted, you will see that the
bridge is towards the nut, and sits on top of the pick guard.
Also, having the Jag tail-piece makes for a different sound because of string
length. It doesn't matter where the bridge is, how long the string{ to the tail
piece} will effect the tone.
That humbucker{Seymor '59} on that Blonde guitar sounds real big and round. Not
the sound I expected from a pick up like that. I guess because of that string
length/bridge/tailpiece issue.

The long neck, of course would work.

the Eliminators? are they back together? dare we expect another album from
them? (stuck on the east coast, so live shows are out of the question for
me)

Dave, do you have any pictures of your new guitar?
How'd the gig go? I also thought the Eliminators broke up.
Thanks,
BN
I don't have pictures of it because it's not done yet. The body has been cut
from the blank body spread, and hopefully it is ready for paint this week. I'll
find out Monday if my '63 neck is going to work. It has a nasty back-bow making
the first two fret rattle real badly.
As far as the gig at the Huntington Pier, they didn't bother to make the set
times known to me so half way down there Dusty called to say turn around and go
back home. Aint that somethin'?

Dave,
This is very puzzling. Why go for a Strat body? I thought you liked
the Jag body better...

also, what about pickup #3? will there be a third pickup?
a strat pickup? a jag pickup? a jazzmaster pickup? how
about a Tele neck pickup?

I've played Strats since I was 19, through all the years when it wasn't always
considered cool. But I always had them scratchin' their Mullet-equipped heads as
to how I got that thing to stay in tune. The first Slacktone album was done with
my '58 Strat, {Goldfinger, the '57 Strat}. The "Into the Blue Sparkle" CD was
done with the white Jaguar, except for "Daytona Mona", which was the '58 Strat,
and "South Run". was the Green Jazzmaster US re-issue.
I was just thinking of a different look, which would probably turn into a
different sound, as well. Judging by the way the first one sounds{ pictured}, I
think mine will be unique. As a bonus, which contributed to the idea, maybe I'll
be able to cram two of them in my suitcase. A common technique used by
travelling guitar players without the big bucks tour support to pay for adequate
cartage.
I still really like the Jaguar for lots of reasons. While sitting down playing,
the Jaguar positions the neck in a better place. It's a little higher. I put the
guitar on my left leg {text book classical style} because it positions the
guitar closer to where it will be while standing. Your right arm is in a better
position, too. You also have better access to the whole neck.
Anyway, I just left Fender and talked with the guy who's shaping and painting
the body, and I'll OK it for painting tomarrow. It's only money, guitars must be
worth it. Otherwise, they wouldn't cost so much!

Yes, the bridge is mounted on top of the pick-guard. It has the same two "cups"
used on Jaguars. So ther are three hole in the pick guard; two for the bridge,
and one for the mute. The pick guard is not shaped the same as a Strat. That's
why there is only two knobs and the switch is in a different place. There's not
as much room as a Strat body cavity would have.
Everything is compacted to accommodate the 24" scale. That's also why there is
only two pick ups. If you cram another pick up in the space available here, the
magnetic fields will conflict, and wimp out the sound.
I would like to try some TV Jones pick ups, or maybe mix and match. But right
now I want to start with two Jaguar pick ups, and go from there. If I was a
running things, I'd make a junker test body I could slip all combonations into,
and the True Path would quickly be found. Maybe that's why guitar players seem
to be so conservative about their equipment-the cost of trial and error.

By changing the fret spacing. When the nut is closer to the bridge, frets
are closer together, and the opposite for the longer neck. Can't speak to
the quality of the products; they just looked reasonably possible to me.

My tour diary:
Hi guys,
okay, enlighten a know-nothing DIY-er....
I have a self assembled strat with a body and neck of different brands.
since the neck is 'too high' for the cavity in the body, the bridge ended up
being too low. So I put a piece of pickguard material under the (classical
strat type) briidge... I found the sound to be rather thin (thiner then it
should be with the MIJ jazzmaster pups that are in there) .... I figured
that the thinner sound was the fault of the piece of pickguard material
under the bridge and was considering changing to a piece of (glued on)
wood... would this help? how does it work out with your prototype?
[obviously, the thin sound in my guitar could also be caused by the crapy
Hondo body, the crapy squire neck or the MIJpups... :-) ]

The long necks, like the Fender Bajo, Dan Electro, extend out towards the
headstock. That way they didn't have to change the body from their standard
production.
