In the interest of science I took the old Dano and I put an old set of big
heavies on it. The strings are .016-.054. They fit the aluminum nut like it was
made for big heavies. before tuning I checked the neck: after 45 or so years
still straight as an arrow. Got it up to pitch, plugged it in and man it never
sounded better even through a solid state practice amp. The big heavies are
punishing but so is the tone you get with them. Ran through four or five songs
and decided to check the neck again, sure enough it was getting ready for the
archery range. I loosened those strings up fast but like I said it was all in
the interest of science.
As far as special tools, just about the only tool you need to work on a Dano
is a phillips screwdriver.
One trouble spot that might be causing the buzzing is the bridge plate in
front of the string saddles--make sure there is adequate clearance between the
strings and the bridge plate. Another cause could be the bridge is set up too
flat. Strings generally need to be angled down about 12 degrees to have enough
pressure on the bridge saddles.
Hope that helps. Now I have to go slap some Tolex on the cabinet for the
reverb I'm building.
