Speaking of Trem Arms . . .

Dick (flatwound01) - 03 Jul 2003 21:46:11

In the buzz stop thread, Brian mentioned the problem with the MIA RI
Jag trem arms being too loose - my RI Jag suffers from that problem,
too. I'm one of those plumber's tape users, which works o.k., but
still requires replacement after a while. I can tell when it's time
for a change of tape when I lean forward and the trem arm falls out -
grrrrr!
Recently, I've experimenting with plastic wrap - the kind that you
get at the grocery store and use to cover food, etc. I've found
that about 2 1/2 or 3 wraps around the trem arm holds it quite
nicely. This method has the added advantage of not being as
slippery as the teflon tape (yes, I suppose it's cling wrap . . . ),
and the arm seems a bit stiffer, which I like. I'm sure some of the
industrial grade wrap that restaurants use would be even better. I
haven't played around with the wrap long enough to know how durable
it is, but so far, so good. Note that I don't wrap the portion of
the arm that *should* snap into the collet - I don't want to stretch
the collet out any more than it is!
I'll resist the urge to make bad jokes about how my playing
is "fresher" using the plastic wrap . . . but I will say that it has
the added benefit of being transparent, if that matters. Not a
permanent solution, but it might have possibilities.
