reverberated metallica

D. P. (noetical1) - 19 Jun 2003 10:36:28

Hi List:
I had a cool dream last night, and I thought I'd share it with you
all to see what you all think.
In my dream, Metallica was pure reverb instrumental...
and they kicked absolute butt! They were absolutely rockin', in a
ventures/metallica sort of way.
So, when I woke up, I thought..."man, I wonder if any of those
hodaddys on the SG101 list ever thought of this?"
Dude...what about a dripping wet reverberated tribute to Metallica?
I can hear "Master of Puppets" in my mind as I type out the words.
Any would-be producers out there? Any interested musicians?
Man, maybe old Dick Dale could whip up a mean surf-jam version
of "Enter Sandman"... or maybe Slacktone could whip up something
special...
so what do you all think?

John Blair has become a big Metallica fan in the last few years (even
bought a Jackson Soloist!), and has been talking about wanting to put
together a band that would somehow combine driven surf music with
Metallica. Talk to him!
PS I'm not into Metallica, but Iron Maiden - now we're talking!!!!

did you think the Cossacks sounded like metal??? Anyway, don't see
any reunions any time soon... Though, you know, as they say, money

the cossacks weren't metal...but, they were definately
"driving surf"... with the musical prowess of the
cossacks, I figured they could do justice to the concept.

Scary thought,
I just picked up "St Anger" on release day, and thought that James H
would make a hell of a Dick Dale double picked surf guitarist too.
Iron Maiden could do metal versions of the Astronauts and Satan's
Pilgrims tunes with their 3 guitar attck.
Scott Ian from Anthrax could probably do Dick Dale tunes using all
down strokes.
Urban Surf Kings routinely play "Enter Sandman" in our shows, and
used to cover Kiss' "I was Made For Lovin' You".
Rock On!!!

Hmmm, well, the Cossacks are history, but as it happens, for the last
two weeks I've been recording demos of heavy metal songs that all
started life as surf song ideas... They're not quite the same, as in
metal you pretty much must have a vocalist. But I'm finding that the
songs I've been writing lately work pretty well in both, as long as
you know how to rearrange them properly to stay true to each genre.
I love the energy and melody present in the best examples of both
genres, though.
Oh, and... Maiden rules! 3 guitars all the way! Adrian Smith is
god.

Didn't Anthrax record a cover of Pipeline?

There are a handful of Iron Maiden tunes, especially "The Trooper"
and "Wrathchild," that seem like they would translate really well to
a double-picked surf onslaught, to say nothing of Judas
Priest's "Breaking the Law."
As much as I like Maiden (nine albums at last count), though, I'd
like them a lot whole more if the lyrics weren't so amazingly dumb at
times.

Well, sometimes, but they're much more often amazingly great (See
almost anything off Somewhere in Time and the most recent Brave New
World). In fact, I find them to be among the better lyricist in the
metal genre, or really in most rock world, with subjects that go
beyond "squeeze my lemon/she was a fine ho/got smashed out of my head
last night/I'm so sad, I'm sad, woe is me/blah blah blah". but this
is a topic for a different board. sorry....

Check out Gein and The Graverobbers new CD, "Songs In
The Key of Evil." They do an absolutely BADASS cover
of Iron Maiden's "Transylvania." It's one of my
favorite tracks on there, and has been since before I
knew it was an Iron Maiden cover.
