Hey Brian!

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 16 Jun 2003 10:30:13

Hi Brian,
Just wanted to let you know, I got up on stage with a local band
called Johnny Graves and the Blue Waves and played a surf set this
weekend. So, I broke my cherry, so to speak. First chance to play on
stage. It was great. We jammed through a bunch of first-wave surf
songs (Pipeline, Walk Don't Run, Wipeout, Latinia) and I got to play
lead. IT was surprisingly easy - I got to play Johnny's Strat through
a Fender Princeton. Not a flawless performance, but tons of fun.
My band is still forming...getting personnel with the desire to do
surf instrumental music ain't easy here, but it's moving ahead.
Fortunately, I have a great drummer, so it's just a matter of finding
a bass player and maybe another guitar down the road.
I just wanted to let you know, much of my success is due to this web
group. So, you can take credit.
I wanted to ask a special favor: as you know, tab for the later surf
music is nearly impossible so I really appreciate your Man..or
Astroman? tab. I'm wondering, would it be possible to burn a CD with
some of the songs you've tabbed? I am not yet good enough to learn by
ear, but definitely want to add some Third Wave to my repertoire. I
will eventually acquire more Third Wave bands CDs, but it would be a
big help to have a CD with already tabbed music (either MoAM or other
bands you've tabbed).
I realize this is a big favor, so if you don't wanna go to the
trouble, I'll understand. Either way, let me know.
Again, many thanks for doing this web group. IT is a huge inspiration.
Gavin

First of all, I too want to congratulate you for taking that big step. That
is very cool! I would like to be doing that myself soon. Getting started
like you did seems to be the hardest part for me.

Well again, I started this group purely for selfish reasons...I wanted to
learn! To my continual amazement, its the guys in the bands who keep joining
up and sharing all their knowledge here. I want to thank all the band
members and extremely talented people who joined up and contribute here. It
really rocks.

I'm not totally sure what you mean:
1) a CD of the tab, or
2) a CD of the songs that have been tabbed?
If you mean 1, I could just zip up all the tab I have and post it in the
file area here. Would that be good enough?
If you mean 2, well I'd feel kind of funny doing that. Most of the 3rd wave
stuff is still widely available, especially MoAM?, who were extremely
prolific (quantity does not always mean quality however). I wouldn't want to
offend any of the above mentioned band members by copying their stuff,
especially when you can still buy it without too much trouble. Only if I got
each and every bands permission would I want to do that. Sorry...!
It would be a cool idea though, to publish a 3rd wave surf CD/tablature
book....

I'm kind of in the opposite boat. I am fairly good at picking stuff up by
ear, but only because I've practiced that for a while, forcing myself to tab
songs. However, I don't think I could get up and play a few songs live, yet.
Or maybe I could... Should I just try it....? Advice anyone? Is the hardest
part just getting up on the stage the first time?
Thanks,
BN
PS
BTW, sitting down with a song, slowing it down on the computer, and learning
the licks really has helped me a lot. I pick stuff out easier on the fly,
and have pretty much moved out of the tabbing stage. I now do it only if I
want to really remember a lick.

Hey Gavin,
that sounds great, congratiulations. don't worry about your skills too much.
obviously, learning and getting better all the time is great part of the
fun, but playing flawless is not the essence of a great live performance...
At my very first gig (about 12 years ago) with a new wave punk band, our
drummer didn't show up. We played with a friend of ours, who had one day
experience behind the kit, after one 1 1/2 hour rehearsal. It was half a
pound of fun, and tons of embaressement! Anyway, he stuck with us, learned
to play the drums and after me brainwashing him into surf is still playing
with me..... so keep jamming
I'm with brian on burning cd's by small bands, but if it's any help I'll be
happy to take a look at songs from cd's we just happen to both have.
Unfortunatly, I tab relatively easy, but I'm an ass with computers, so it
will be a handwritten and scanned tab.
my favourites at the moment are Nebula 1, bambi molestors' intensity,
slacktone live, and the treble spankers. there's a lot more, just ask and i
can see if i have it; feel free to mail me off-list
trying to tab yourself though is a great lesson. Also, if you like it, you
might consider buying a book out musical theory, or getting some lessons, or
maybe a knowledgeable friend to explain some stuff. having an understanding
of musical theory really, really really helps with figuring out songs
also, before recording other people's tunes or playing them live, make sure
you know what the copy-rights situation is ( I only know for the
netherlands, I'm sure there are plent of people on the list who know how it
works in the states)

Thanks Wannes,
I'm biting the bullet and buying as many albums as I can. I am really
stoked about The Nebulas and Slacktone, mainly because Dano's insights
have been invaluable and Dusty went out of his way to be nice to me in
Colorado Springs. Regretfully, the budget is thin and buying a mess of
CDs to learn one or two new songs is a huge burden. Still, as a
writer, I completely understand and empathize with artists wanting to
get a return on their creativity, and so I'll just continue to expand
my CD collection at the cost of eating beans and tortillas.
Thanks for all the encouragement as far as playing goes...it's been my
goal from the start to play gigs, so I am boldly stepping forth.
Fortunately, the local musicians here in Colorado Springs are
tight-knit and supportive. It's a small scene, but very cool. Just
wish more of them were hip to surf music!
I'm working a lot on theory, but from a blues perspective. Early on, I
set out to learn blues as a basis for playing rock. I'm trying to
understand a lot of the structure of early surf music, which often
seems to be based on major scales and cords. But for now, learning the
songs note-for-note is how I am attacking surf stuff.
Again, many thanks to the folks who frequent Surf 101 - it really has
been my main source of learning in my first year-and-a-half of playing.
