Magnatone Amps...

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 14 Jun 2003 01:09:07

I was just curious...has anyone ever thought to use a Magnatone amp
for surf music? And does anyone have some experience with these old
amps? They had a "true vibrato" in some models, rather than the
tremelo popularized in the Fenders, and I guess were pretty high-end
amps in their hey-day back in the late 1950s-mid 60s. Lots of
innovative stuff. I've never actually heard one, but they seem pretty
ubiquitous as far as the used vintage market goes.
Since finding my Premier, I'm just curious about some vintage amps
that price a lot lower than Fenders, but might still have great
tube/surf mojo.

Gavin,
While I can't speak first hand for Magnatone amps, my experience with
my Magnatone guitar would lead me to say give it a shot. As I recall
from a little bit of my own research, Magnatone was best known for
their amps and lap steel guitars. I've had my Magnatone (a typhoon --
more or less like a strat, but the pickups are sort of like a single
coil/soapbar/mini humbucker hybrid) for... wow... over a year now I
think, and it's stood up to a lot of wear and tear, but sounds really
great. If the amps are even close to what the guitar is like, you'll
get plenty of "vintage mojo".
If you got me a model/number, and shot it to me off list, I can check
what blue book value is on an amp like that when I'm back in my music
shop on Weds.

I'm pretty sure that Duane Eddy used a magnatone amp on his early records.
It was customized to have a 100W power section.

The Fireballs used a Magnatone amp. Inlcuding the
tracks they overdubbed on old Buddy holly recordings.
