Tremolo is the changing of volume.
Vibrato is the changing of pitch.
Unfortunately:
1) some amps call their tremolo effects 'Vibrato'
2) the whammy bar on guitars is often called the trem (or tremolo) bar
despite the fact that it doesn't change your volume, it changes the pitch...
Hope that helps,
BN

Leo Fender was a god, but with small 'g'. This is one of the reasons
why: he totally screwed all of this up! He called the vibrato
system on his guitars "tremolo", and the tremolo effect on his
amps "vibrato"! What the hell??? Mistake or was it intended? Who
knows? He wasn't a musician, so maybe it was just a mistake.
Anyway, the classic surf music effect, and second most ubiquitous
after reverb, is tremolo. You know, that thing that on Fender amps
is labeled as vibrato. The best sounding tremolo for surf definitely
comes from Fender amps (especially the brownface ones, made from '60-
'63 - "like buttah!"), but there are pedals out there that do a good
job. I'll leave it to others to name them.
Vibrato effect has not often been used in surf music. Unlike
tremolo, which has a 'natural', organic sound to it (if that makes
any sense), vibrato sounds kinda gimmicky. It has that "Crimson and
Clover", sixties psychadelic sound. Even guys that play Vox AC30
amps which come with both tremolo and vibrato (properly labeled at
that!) almost never use the vibrato, while often using the tremolo.
But hey, maybe you can use it in a totally new and innovative way,
and blow us all away!

Hi there,
I have no experience with vibrato pedals (pitch shifters, to be sure ;-)
...
for trem, I have a boss ( the later dark green version) a george dennis ping
pong tremolo and the built in of a twin...
The boss has the most setting options, but it's way to digital, metalic
sounding for surf, imho. i used to use it for spacey disco tunes in a former
life though....
fender built in is good and simple, but if you don't have it in your amp,
but are happy with you're amp for the rest, it's not wotth changing amps for
the george dennis is at least worth checking out if you get a chance. the
trem itself is really good, though the setting range might be small for
some, but it works great for surf. doesn't screw up your signal to much
anyway.
It has a couple of bonussus though that are really worth checking out: it
has an expression pedal, which whit trem on, sets the depth, when turned of
(dunlop style push through) it's a volume pedal.
it also has stereo output, whit a small (changable) delay in the left and
right channel. this - if you have two amps - allows for great massive stereo
chorussing..... without it sounding like a chorus!
it's absolutely useless for surf, but it's an awesome gadget and i had many
happy night in rehearsal room with a couple of beers and this stereo set-up.
also its cheap, around $60 new here in europe
for vibrato (pitch shifting), you could also consider practicing picking
with vibratohandle in your right hand, wobbling it. this works quite well
once you get it down. and it's great right hand practice. i think blur has a
song on one of their later albums played like that.... oops sorry, wrong
list!
hope that helps,
wannes

The Danelectro Tuna Melt Tremolo is cheap and does the trick.
If you are looking for some wobbeling under water sounds I recommend the
Danelectro chicken salad vibrato

Hi,
I totally agree with Roland on this one, the Danelectro Tuna Melt is
very nice and delivers well. I would advise you to put it in front of
your reverb tank, since it doesn't really bypas when in off mode, it
alters the signal only slightly, but when put in front or 2nd in the
chain it preforms very good. (Thanks for the tip Roland, the tank sounds
more verstaile now and I got rid of the high bass cuts by altering the
pedal effext chain as you suggested)

Yes I know I adviced to put the tremolo in front of the reverb, but recently I
found out that that the tremolo sounds better when you put it behind the reverb
unit. As a matter of fact the delayed signal of the reverb masks the tremolo
effect when it is placed in front of the reverb. This shows that different
effects can interact on each other and that there is no vast rule for an effects
configuration. So you better try out different configurations to find out what
sounds bests in your ears.
