What power tubes do you use in your Fender amps?

Jerry (whipeoutboy63) - 10 Jun 2003 07:44:49

Hi,
Just a quick question (for all you amp geeks;). What power tubes do you
use in your Fender amp? Showman, Dual Showman, Twin reverb etc?
I got a SF Bandmaster reverb that needs new tubes. I got the Choiche
between 6L6GC from Svetlana, Phillips 7581A (EC&G) and General
Electric 6L6GT. I will only need one matched pair for my Banmaster, +
some 12AT7 and 12AX7 and the reverb and trem drivers.
What reverb and Tremolo driver? Mullard?
So what is your advice? (No, A showman/Dual-Showman is not on the list,
sorry :)
Kind regards,
Jerry S from Belgium

Jerry,
I use two General Electric 6L6 in my Bassman 50.
Best tubes I ever put in it. They were "new old stock"
straight from 1961 box...got them from my dad...a ham
radio/tube amp geek. They sound so smooth and right-on.
Others I have used were: Groove tube,Sovtek and Mesa.
The Mesa tubes were nice, but the GE ones just smell right!

Hi Jerry,
As I posted recently, I've had good luck with JJ Tubes. They are
from Slovakia, I believe. I put a complete set in my Showman, and
just power tubes in my Hot Rod DeVille.

The best 6L6 power tube that I have heard is the 6L6GE that is made in the USA
by Groovetubes. They bought the original machines that were used to make the GE
6L6 power tubes used in Fender amps made in the 60s. They are really great, and
this comes from a guy who is no big fan of 6L6 power tubes, especially the
modern stuff. Go to the Groovetubes site and see pics of the machines they use
to make
New production pre-amp tubes: get JJ brand at eurotubes.com. Bob checks them
before they are sent, so you'll get no stinkin' microphonic tubes.

The guy Jon at The Tube Store recommended these Svets (review below).
I was gonna give 'em a try...nice price. But the OEM tubes Dave
Wronski mentioned might sway me in that direction. Hmmm...
Gavin
SED (Svetlana) 6L6GC From our review of this tube: "This may be the
closest thing available if you really want the vintage sound of the
large bottle Sylvania and RCA tubes of yesterday. Tremendous harmonic
content...

my 2 cents on tubes - here's a blanket statement that may be unfair:
Chinese and Eastern Europe tubes don't sound as good or last as long
as NOS tubes. If NOS tubes cost twice as much as imports, but
last twice as long and sound better, they are a good deal. If you
don't run your amp with power tube distortion and bias them properly
(not too "cold" though), a good set of tubes will last a long time.
to my ear, the NOS tubes are more "Hi-Fi" and the new tubes
(especially pre amp tubes) are geared more toward the hi gain crowd,
which to me, isn't surf.
I've had good luck with used american (or telefunken/mullard) pre amp
tubes. one of my favorite tubes is an RCA 7025 with a lot of hours on
it - it's not microphonic and sounds great. Let your ears be your
guide on preamp tubes, try 'em in different slots and see what you
think. try some used preamp tubes from eBay and give 'em a listen, it
won't set you back much. here's an interesting link:
here's another link for an interesting power tube. I have a pair of
these, but haven't tried 'em yet:

Hi Guys,
Thanks a lot for your great advice on tubes and power tubes to be used
in Fender amps. I really appreciate it. I asked this question since
(thanks to Roland) I got in touch with a wholesale buisness located in
Brussels (Belgium) that specializes in Vintage tubes and they got them
all. They also have good prices on NOS tubes, so I definitelly will go
NOS. Probably RCA 7025 to replace the Sovteks that I got now.
Thanks to all of you,
Jerry S. from Belgica.

I prefer the Mullard 12AX7 in Fender amps, and those Telefunkens in those '60s
plastic control panel M******L and V*X amps. But as the modern power tube
production improves, the pre-amp tube of today leaves much to be improved. Maybe
because the market cannot support the cost of a quality tube. After all, a guy
can go out and earn a living with a $5 Russian/Chinese tube in his amp.
Something to check: JJ has come out with a GZ34 rectifier that, of course,
claims to be similar to a Mullard. If this is even partially true, it's great
news. The Mullard GZ34 in a Fender is the ultimate for BIG dynamics. I've never
had one fail, either
