Hi All,
Does anyone know exactly what Jim uses to get his Mermen-tone
out of his strat? I know he has all the different pickups going out
to different effects. Does anyone know what the effects and their
arrangement are? I would really like to cop that tone- a magnificent
one. Thanks. JWL

Seeing my response makes me shudder - it was meant in a humorous way. The
details of Jim's setup seems to vary every time he sets up!
The consistent things are a pair(?) of Boss Tremolo's, Lexicon LXP-15, Fender
amps (dual showmen usually - is Stanner in the house?). It's been awhile (too
long) since I've seen them play...

It's also been a long time since I even thought about Jim's rig, but
one very important component that I clearly remember is the nineties'
digital Oberheim Echoplex for all the looping he does. Sean is right
about two (or three?) Boss PN-2 Tremolo/Pan pedals (now
discontinued), I remember those very clearly. I do also remember
reading a couple of years ago that he got a Surf Box (I think that's
the name of it), which combined tube-drive spring reverb and tube
tremolo in a rack-mounted unit (was that made by Matchless? I can't
remember now). Let's see, I think I also remember there being one of
those tube-overdrive pedals, like Blue Drive or something, can't
remember the manufacter again. I hope that helps a bit at least.
It's a very complex setup, for sure. He used to feed the neck and
bridge pickups individually into different amps, but in those latest
pictures somebody posted, it looked like he just had one cord plugged
into the guitar. Maybe he's simplified things?

Some time last year(?) he stopped using the Echoplexes and switched to an
ElectrixPro Repeater. I think there is a possibility that he was using the
Echoplex again this year.

I wouldn't doubt that he's got one but I don't recall seeing it live.

Yeah - something like Tube Works real tube overdrive - but I thought he had a
rack mount version...

I thought it was bridge and neck into amp, middle into the overdrive for on
demand feedback (though it depends on the guitar in use).
He's got lots of other odds and ends he brings out - moogerfooger, electrixpro
filter factory, tc electronic delay, mixer, sampler, etc.
Thanks for your guys' responses. It would be even more awesome if any
of you know what kind of arrangement of effects could get a
Thomasesque tone out of a strat without breaking the bank. The Mermen
were highly responsible for my surf journey and playing some tunes
(that I have yet to hear them play) through that kind of setup would
be really interesting. Jim Thomas and Jimmy Wilsey - what's with the
Jim thing? :) Thanks. Dario (aka JWL)

How about a Wilsey-esque tone, instead? I would be more interested in
hearing that than a Thomas clone, or a Mermen cover band. Jim is an
original. There is something almost sacriligious about trying to cover
his "performance art". He sounds different with different drummers, to
me, and he has effects that are only available on the used market,
like a Lexicon Lp-15 fer instance, or the Chandler Tube Driver. A lot
of the gnarlt sounds he gets from the envelope follower of the
Electrix Filter Factory driving a Moog Ring Modulator. Then he likes
to put the headstock of his guitar on the cymbal while the drummer
interacts with his feedback loop. Man--its hard for HIM to recreate
some of his performances. That's why tapes of their performances are
so cool. It seems to me that what Jim did, was to find his own
inimitable thing. Go and do likewise. To me, anyway, the best stuff is
original.

Ohsyrus,
What I'm trying to ask is that I wonder if there is anyone out
there who has come across using some readily available and
economical effects which can offer that Mermenesque sound? I don't
disagree with you in that the live performances are unique and
pretty irreproducible. I just hope that there may be a way to get
a "basic Mermen-type tone" and do it economically. Some of the
Mermen's live stuff is D.Dale et al. stuff but with Jim's touch. I
think Jim makes those songs come alive and sound better than the
original 60's tunes. I know that may not make everyone happy but it
is honestly how I feel. My $0.02. Dario

It's gonna be hard, or pretty much impossible to do
it 'economically'. But you should start with 1) a decent loud clean
Fender amp, a Twin would be fine; 2) digital delay set for long delay
times, above 600 mSec; 3) a decent digital reverb, set
to 'cavernous'; 4) a good overdrive (not distortion) pedal that'll
coax the feedback out of a cranked-but-clean Fender amp, and give
that agression (the 'hair') to the notes without completely coloring
the tone and losing that Fenderish quality; 5) VERY heavy strings on
your Strat, I think he uses Dick-Dale like gauges of 13-60, or
something like that. You can forget bending the strings with your
fingers. And then you just gotta have Jim's fingers and heart and
mind - and you're all set!

Look around for a box called a Space Station that came out a few years ago.
Awesome, rich tones that
are blends of reverb, delay and harmonizer.

One crucial tip to Jim's sound is that he have a volume pedal pre-send to his
reverb. this allows
him to adjust how wet he gets in the middle of a phrase, and gives him that
multi-dimensional
space-- Most guys set their reverbs and don't change the settings, whereas he
can do it on the fly.
He also uses volume pedals pre-feed for his distortion and delays...
And despite what Jim said in Guitar Player about not being able to bend those
heavy strings, he does
it al the time.

board so that makes sense. He also had a phaser and the tremolo pan.
It just seems like so much stuff there and not to mention what else
he is using that isn't in the pic. I hope that tone doesn't have to
be that complicated to get to but if it is then oh well. Thanks for
the useful help. JWL

And don't forget the rack mount graphic equalizer to shape the tone...
and rewire your guitar for two output jacks...and use super heavy
flat-wound strings...the biggest you can lay your hands on.

I really think that the essence of Jim's tone is in his playing style not his
gear. He is very
aggressive with his picking, and he really knows his chord inversions. If you
see him play with his
side band The Shitones, where he plays with a stripped down set up, you see that
the magic comes
from his fingers, not all the toys. I also understand that he practices at least
4 hours a day- that
will do wonders for your playing.
One other Jim trick, and this has come up in some of the other threads-- put
your tremelo after your
reverb, and set it to a square wave. Gets that strobe effect...

Ferenc,
True, I do belive that too but there must be something said for
the sound. I'm sure SRV or Hendrix playing through other effects
than the ones they used would sound good but you'll notice the
flavor is different. That's what I'm after not necessarily the exact
playing style. The pickups may also be something to consider.
Thanks. JWL
