Hi Everyone,
I just picked up a Fender reverb unit, and I'm not sure
if it is working properly.
The tone seems to be there, but the decay seems very short.
Is this normal?
Also when I turn the mix up the overall level drops about 30-50
percent, is this normal?
Please let me know.
Thanks.
Gerry dahl
Did you release the clamp that holds down the tank?
The effect you describe when the mix control is turned up is normal.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply's.
Well, after swapping the spring tank, I found the problem,
Bad spring tank.
So next question, Who sells the best replacement tank for a '64
Fender reverb unit.
Thanks.

Hi Gerry,
I'm no expert, but how does a "tank" go bad? Isn't it just the tub
the springs are in? Aren't the transducers (the things that attach
to the springs that convert electrical energy to mechanical) the
critical pieces? Or is that what you meant?
I guess I need to take mine apart and look at it a bit closer. Is
there a site out there with pics of the innards?
Just curious...

Oooh! Now you're hitting my weak spot - reverb pan porn . . .
I guess just about anything in the pan can go bad, but I would imagine most
failures are due to the springs being deformed or broken (just from banging
around, etc.) Accutronics supplies the pans used in the RI reverb tanks.
They will sell replacement parts for their pans, but that assumes you know
what needs to be replaced.
A complete Accurtonics replacement pan for the RI reverb tanks goes for
about $35 - $40 (I think) - you can get them at places like Ampwares,
Hoffman Amps, Angela Instruments, etc. If you do replace your pan, be sure
to get the correct type for the RI reverb unit (unless you want to
experiment with a longer delay or something). In my RI tank, the pan used
is a 4AB3C1C. I recall that they only type of tank I was able to locate on
the Internet a while back was a 4AB3C1B; as far as I know, that can be used
a replacement for the 4AB3C1C, if that's what you have (the only difference
between the two is the designated mounting orientation (horizontal or
vertical), as that affects the positioning of the magnets on the
laminations.
In case you want to know the secret code they use, and what those numbers
and letters mean, refer to the link Brian posted below. Good luck!

Thanks for all the replys!
I found a tank at Antique electronic supply.
Hoffman amps says the 4AB3C1B is used in the amps and the Reverb unit,
so thats what I got.
Only $20.95 !!!
Best price I found for an Accutronics.
Thanks again.

P.S. did any of you go on the Surfin to Baja Cruise with
The Ventures?

For the first problem (the sustain/decay problem)...did you
check the pan-lock in the back...the metal lever that
pushes the pan against the front of the unit during
transport... the pan lock arm should be disengaged...
The mix problem does not sound normal...you might want to
bench your unit at a reputable amp shop and get a proper
diagnosis.
