Hey Dano / TooFastJim (or anyone else present):
How was the shindig with Dusty?
Whats it like playing with other people you haven't rehearsed with
before? (I assume you went in cold).
Thanks!
BN
Hey there Brian!
I gave a review on Cowabunga at someones request, so to avoid retyping
it, I'll just paste it in...
The show was a blast! As you know, it's been pretty wet here in the east,
and Saturday night was no exception. It's been a long time since I remember
a rain that was that steady and that hard at the same time. There were
rivers of water running through the gutters, so to those diehards who all
ventured out in the wee hours, we salute thee! :)
Tobacco Road is an AWESOME club right on the edge of the Hell's Kitchen
section of NYC. They had a great stage, plenty of lighting and *imagine
this*...a guy who knew how to use it! They also have a 4 camera video system
that allows a band to request a DVD of the evening, and they also pipe the
video down into the dressing room with audio, so you can just hang down
there and keep an eye on the other bands without having to send a scout to
see if they're done yet or not.
The club staff was REALLY nice which, after playing clubs in and around
Boston, you realize is a nice change.
So on we went at 1 AM, and wasted no time. We TORE into -------*, which
will be featured on our forthcoming album titled -------* which is due out
on ----------*. We hit it non-stop until Dusty showed up, and TooFastJim
relinquished his throne. We played about 5 or 6 songs with Dusty, and we
finished off by doing Slacktone's "Tidal Wave". Dusty had been forewarned
before the show, and he said "It'll probably be a lot slower than normal,
I'll be tired." Well...he wasn't. The man pounded out Tidal Wave in all its
original fury and tempo, and we were stoked! THEN, we got Dusty to switch
out and we had the drummer from NYC's Irreversible Slacks come up and do a
few. I believe we did "The Wedge" and "Morpheus" with him, but it was
getting SO late it was all starting to run together for me. TFJ got up for 1
or 2 more, and we were off.
Joe Queer got up and played his stuff with Dusty and Sam Bolle from
Slacktone/DD/Agent Orange on bass. I let him use my Showman and I can tell
you this: it was WEIRD to hear distortion coming from my amp! Anyways, they
did a great job. I met Joe for the first time last week backstage at a DD
show in Boston, and I really like him. The guy cracks me up.
As we were packing up post-performance, Ray Dukes introduced himself and
that was really cool. I like meeting people from the lists because it gives
more gravity to their posts rather than it just being another voice from the
ether. So go listen to Devlar Surf Sessions! the links are posted on the
links page at thenebulas.com.
Hmm, I think thats about it...anything I missed here will be covered on
the test.

Playing with Dusty without rehearsal was cool. Dusty is so versatile and
talented that he doesn't require rehearsal. We banged out tunes with him
like "Rhino Chaser" and he took to them pretty easily. I believe Eric, our
bass player sent Dusty a mix CD of the tunes we would do with him but I'm
not sure. Just to make sure we had all bases covered we learned Slacktone's
"Tidal Wave" and we finished out our Dusty stint with that. That RULED for
me because I have and always will LOVE that tune. I'll play again with him
any day.
Looking forward to Indy...

Great report Dano! Thank you. One question:

Since Dave Wronski is a one man band who plays both lead and rhythm
seemingly simultaneously, how did you approach coming up with an independent
rhythm part for Tidal Wave? Did you do chords or chunking? Both?
Thanks!
BN
The rhythm part was fun to come up with and play. You are absolutely correct
about DW being a one man band...there's just something about people with the
initials D.W...
Just kidding. Anyways, Here's one example. The songs starts with a Nasty
dive with Dusty, Dave and Mike all diving, doing their thing. Then the songs
starts in on E, then goes up to G, then to Bb and then back to G, then Bb,
and the peaks on B.
The way Wronski does it is to hit the chord for the first beat, and then
jump into the lead on the second beat. The way we worked it out was I would
hit the full chord, and as it rang out I would start chunking on the E and
the A string based on the chord being played. It worked out quite nicely if
I do say so myself. Hell TFJ stood in the audience and watched, so he would
be a better authority on how it sounded than I would be, but basically once
you break Tidal Wave down in two parts, its not too tough to figure out. Jim
might vouch differently for the drum parts, especially since we'd make him
play the drum solo over and over and over while we figured out how best to
come back in. The drummer doesn't get out that easy. :)
So, in a nutshell, some parts were chords, some parts chunking, and some
parts a mix of both.
Rudy is an animal and I give him GREAT credit for figuring out Wronski's
guitar parts.

It really does take two mortal guitar players to equal one Wronski. Even when
you split his parts up, it doesn't sound like there's an extra guy up there
trying to make himself useful because there's so damn much going on
