Hi All,
I was wondering which effects besides reverb and tremolo are often used
in Surf music in general?
Let's say the use of tape Echo, Delay, distortion etc?
I would like to know, since I got a bit unhappy with just my Reverb tank
on my amp. (as when playing live, I would like to get some variation in
my guitar sound.)
I also use a bit of Digital delay and a Danelectro Tuna Melt and /or
onboard Fender tremolo/vibrato.
I also have some difficulties in obtaining a nice clean Sparkly sound on
my Silverface Bandmaster reverb. (but I guess thats mainly because of
the dark growl of my Seymour Duncan Antuiqity I pick ups, since it
sounds rather nice when a Strat is used with the same settings)
But would a equilizer pedal be any help in this region? I have to much
mid from the SD pick-ups and noth enough treb and Bass. But any solution
rather than changing the Pick-ups would be most Welcome. (I probably
will only use this a temporary solution until I can obtain AV Re-issue
Pick ups for my CIJ Jazzmaster, or should I look out for any other good
clean (high trebble) Jazzmaster pick-ups for the "Vintage" surf sound?)
Any help is most welcome.
TIA,
Jerry S.
Jerry,
1.Have you tried flatwound strings (d'addario chromes)?
2. Have tried a wah-wah?
3. Have you tried an arbiter fuzz face?
4. Have you tried a phaser/ phase shifter?
5. Have you tried a blue-tube preamp?
remember, the key to "surf" is tone, tone tone.
if you get too wacky with the effects, all of a sudden you
end up sounding like Neil Young and crazy horse.
good luck,
dave pike

Hi,
I use d'Addario Flat wound chromes. Thanks for the tip of the Chorus,
will try that.
Any idea where to put it in the chain?
Before or after the reverb tank?
Any ideas at all about using a eqiulizer pedal as well for tone
stability?
Thanks,
Jerry

I've often wondered what other kinds of effects people
use in front of their tanks. You can't hurt a tank by
running pedals in front of it, can you? As of now, my
tank is all I have, I''ve sold my EH Holy Grail and my
Boss DS-1. I have never touched tremelo, echo, fuzz
or anything else. I had always assumed that the best
way to go would be compressor -->reverb tank -->amp.

Neil has THE heaviest live sound I have ever heard, and he's only
playing through a small vintage Fender Amp (can't remember the
model). He started out in a surf band in Winnipeg; the Auroras, I
think? They released a single.

Hi Jerry,
effects: personnally I have an overdrive (the most simplke boss) in my rig,
which I only use for Dave Allen's version of lullaby of the leaves.
And a danelectro delay (the 'old one'not the tapedelay simulator). however I
use it less and less.
and a george Dennis PingPing tremolo. You might want to check it ou. it has
a stereo tremolo, which delays the term on one channel just a little bit.
It creates great trem-effect, a littlebit cure-ish chorussing, but without
sounding as mechanical as a chorus/flanger/phaser. (I don't use the option
thoug"for surf ) Another great feature is that it's very cheap, it's
manufacured somewhere in Eastern-Europe. great quality though.
I have the Ventures somewhere with phaser. a lot of phaser (forgot which
track)
and for some serious surf inspired instro stompboxing, check out this band:
www.daikaiju.net
Wannes
PS the reverb unit didn't work out? you're still welcome to come check out
the cosmoverb!

Jerry,
I'm all for expanding your sound. Before playing surf, I
experimented in all sorts of different types of music, and still own
my digital multi-effect processor, I could get everything from
sixties sitar-sounding delay to good ol' Heavy Metal crunch.
Naturally, something like that would be totally taboo in surf.
My main advice to you is to go to a music shop, talk to one of the
sales reps, and get them to fix you up with a Fender tube amp near
where they demo their effect pedals. Set the amp up to your ideal
specs (tone, crank up the stock reverb, etc) and start playing away
on the pedals. Play with each a bit -- turn the knobs and see what
kinds of sounds you can get. It's really up to you and how you want
to craft your sound. Also, especially if you're looking at more
recent pedals that you can find most anywhere, look on ebay, they go
at a fraction of the cost on there for good-as-new pedals.
As far as my present rig goes, I use all Danelectro: the Daddy-O
overdrive, Dan-echo delay, and I use a Cool Cat Chorus as a spinning
speaker simulation for the solo in Runaway. I know a lot of guys out
there really like using a compressor, and that can sound really cool
when done right. If you're willing to try something a little
more "out there", look at some of the Electro-Harmonix pedals... they
can get some really cool tones. Also, the Infrareds use these home-
made fuzz pedals (I think either Rory or Derek makes them), which are
available at www.verbatone.com.
As far as tank placement, always run everything in front of the
tank. Just think of the tank as part of your amp, basically. I
haven't tried the tank in front, but I just have a sneaking suspicion
it would sound awful. So -- always:
Guitar--->effects--->reverb tank--->Amp
Hope this helps a little,
~Bill~

hey jerry,
I just wanted to weigh in and say that if you go the pedal route and want
to maintain your natural clean tone
look for pedals that have true bypass - most cheaper pedals still run your
signal through their little circuit boards even when the effect is off
I never really paid much attention to this when I played in more distortion
based bands, but now that I do a lot of surf/instro/spy stuff, and rely on
my clean tone much of the time having pedals that go away and don't muck
the sound when not in use has been essential
of course, it's all gotta start with how your rig sounds just plugged in
with no effects at all.
when I got my new amp (reverb deluxe) I tried out sooooo many different
amps with my guitar until I found the right sound just plugged straight into it
after a lot of experimenting and sending stuff back to music toyz here's my
current set up
I use a reverend overdrive pedal to get a little fuzz/sustain once in a
while then into a fulltone supa trem (the best trem out there IMHO) and
then into a dan echo (which is not true bypass but doesn't seem to rob tone
that much) and finally into DLS chorus/vib for the wiggly parts in songs
like out of liimits.
I'm still looking for a good delay that is true bypass that sounds as warm
as the dan echo.... I use an old boss analog delay machine (it's got big
knobs!) to run my theremin through but I think it's a bit noisy for the
guitar stuff. - and I'm currently looking for a good fuzz pedal
anyway, true bypass is more expensive and is a very subtle kind of distinction
but I think it's worth paying extra for a pedal that has this and more
expensive pedals are usually built like a tank
so you'll own them for the rest of your life - and usually with these
so-called 'boutique' pedals you can ring up the guy who made them and
actually talk to them about the pedals - and plus, your supporting small
businesses run usually be musicians as well.
anyway, that's the end of my rant.
let us know what you get

dude,
I was just joking around...I just thought Old Neil have the
most "un-surf" live sound, so he was a good example of how
to not sound "surf-like". I agree though: Neil has an
awesome live guitar sound...I like "Cowgirl in the
Sand"...Neils is a cool rock dude!
