After all the discussion about Dick Dale lately I felt compelled to
post my 2 cents worth after seeing the show last night.
The first band was The Orangotones, ,frat rock from here in Denver.
Good show , some new songs , really fun stuff. I think the sound man
may have still been sleeping because you could hardly hear the
guitars when they were soloing.
Then The Beloved invaders took the stage , I'll comment about them
last..............
I've seen dick Dale play 4 or 5 times before , I've always liked him
and always thought he was worth seeing although I never liked What he
thinks about Surf music and his part in it.
Like I said past shows were worth seeing , this one was not. Dick
Dale really lost something in a years time. His playing was not very
fast , he hit alot of bad notes and to put it in words of a late
friend of mine , sloppy. He spent alot of time talking and trying to
get the audience to sing. Telling storys about sound meters and how
loud he plays. The best part was when he walked outside and played
his guitar in the middle of Colfax ave.By the look on everyones face
when they left , I think others felt the same.
The second band to open for Dick Dale , The Beloved Invaders on this
night simply stole the show.I've seen this band play before and every
time I see them they get much better.I was really blown away by the
great tone they had at the Bluebird theater without breaking you ear
drums. They had some new songs , A really good mix of trad. surf and
contemorary songs and also a spy set.The guitar playing was flawless
and the leads just ripped adding alot of new twists and leads to the
trad. songs and just tearing up some newer songs.
I can't begain to say how impressed I was with the drummer.I can't
even put into word how good he was.I thought he was better than
Dusty , although I think Dusty didn't get to show his abilitys on
this night.I'm only assuming thats who was playing drums for Dick
Dale because Dick never introduced his band unless I missed that
part .
The Tootsys , the go-go dancers were in top form and just added even
more to the Invaders great show.
All in all this show put the Beloved Invaders over the top. They are
up there with the top surf bands in the world and will truely inpress
the most hard core surf fans anywhere.
My 2 cents...............................Maui
