My Stupid Amp Qestion

papoon72 - 02 May 2003 11:49:42

I'm a rank amateur player, mainly because I was stupid in my teen
years and didn't use my free hours sitting with a guitar. However I
did spend many of those 60's and 70's hours at the beach in SoCal
(Seal down to Laguna, mostly Huntington Cliffs), so it wasn't a total
loss. Surf music has remained a significant part of my musical life
since then. Now I want to play! Or at least try.
So given that I'm learning and don't have a standard surf rig (mid-
70's Gibson SG, Crate amp w/just OK spring reverb) and don't have a
lot of $$ (teen daughters...), I took the lead from Ryan and got a
used Holy Grail pedal off eBay. Plugged everything in last night and
it's certainly wet. However, when I'm not playing and the pedal is on
there is a constant shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh'ing, kind of like
someone's shaking the virtual tank constantly. So, is this
a 'feature' of Holy Grail or did I get a broken pedal? To my way of
thinking, if I'm not hitting strings, all should be quiet.
Thank you all for all of the great insight, advice, info and
berserking. It's sure great to get input from the Ivan's, Ferenc's
and other greats that I so admire.
Thanx,
Rick

Hi,
I previously used a Holy grail as well, and when not playing the thing
is very quiet, more quiet then my reverb tank.
I nomarly didn't use it more then 3/4 on the knob.
Try to lower the reverb setting, and "wag" the selector switch between
spring, hall and can't remember the name of the third setting.
I had the Shhhhhh...thing once and before opening the thing I rolled the
reverb knob a few times and "wagged" the selector switch. Everything
went bak to normal. However, I seam to remember that the earlier? Holy
Grails had a faulty working bypass. (I can't remember where I read it)
Also make sure the power input of the grail is propperly in.
I still like the Holy Grail as a Reverb pedal, but I sold it to our
rythem guitarst in favor of a real reverb tank.
Although the grail has sounds that I can't get out of the tank, but the
reverb of the tank is soo much sweeter and wetter....
I also found that a humbucker guitar like the SG is more noisy thru the
Grail then a single coil guitar.
