You coulda used "Loco Gringos Likes To Party" (or
somethin like that) by The Reverend Horton Heat. Not
a surf song, but...
Does anyone know which Slacktone CD I can get their
version of Misirlou on? I cannot find it for download
and I'm gettin ready to blow half a paycheck on CD's
anyway.
And Ivan...1700 or 1800 CD's...wow...wow.

I don't habitually download music, only when I want to
hear something immediately. I ALWAYS buy the albums.

I don't see anything wrong with downloading. I can safely say I
wouldn't own 95% of the surf albums I have if I hadn't downloaded a
handful of songs by the band first. Once I downloaded "Malibu Run,"
it was maybe three days before I ordered Randy Holden's Early
Works '64-'66.
I now own every Man or Astroman album ever issued, and a couple of t-
shirts. I saw them in concert before I really listened to them, and
again, it was through downloading a dozen or so of their songs
afterwards that I decided to buy their stuff. I don't think I've cost
the group any money.
What if something's out of print? If I download it or shell out $35
for it on eBay, which I've done on several occasions, the same amount
of money goes to the band.
Also, how about bootlegs? I'm not a fan of the band Pennywise, but
they have (or had, I haven't checked in a few years) a section on
their official website where you can download the bootlegs they've
found of their shows. I think that's a great idea. A lot of other
bands post mp3s on their websites, either full songs or 30 second
samples.
I'm a broke college student, so when someone recommends a band, I'm
not always lucky enough to be able to go and drop $14-18 on a CD of
theirs the next day. If I could have, when ToofastJim recommended
seven or ten bands, of the ones I'd never heard and didn;t own any
stuff by, I would have gone out and bought an album by each one. It
was not, however, financially feasible. In fact, since I went to
Coachella last weekend, I've had fifty cents in the bank until
payday, which isn't until Wednesday.
I can only think of three instances where I've objectively downloaded
entire albums, and then burned them and listened to them:
Satan's Pilgrims - Soul Pilgrim
Bambi Molesters - Sonic Bullets
Ramonetures - s/t
I bought all three within a week.
Maybe I'm in the minority as far as buying a good amount of what I
download, but of the 500 or so CDs and LPs in my collection, over 3/4
are by bands, including four of my five favorites (Stooges, Pixies,
MoAM?, MC5), whom I've downloaded music by first.
Is that a bad thing?
