I've had a soft spot for Cinco De Mayo for many years now. My wife
and I are throwing a party on Quatro De Mayo (since Cinco falls on
Monday) this year, and I've been working on some special music for
the last week or so. After MANY hours going through my CD collection
(which is, hmm, QUITE large - 1700-1800 CDs, probably something like
600-800 surf/instro - not bragging, just trying to indicate the
magnitude of my undertaking), loading up the songs on the RealPlayer,
editing the whole collection down to less than 80 minutes so it can
fit on a CD-R, and working on the right ordering, I finally got it -
and just made the CD. Well, it's just awesome, really, I can't
emphasize enough how much it #*&%@* RULES, and I figured I'd share it
with you so you too can do something similar for yourselves - of
course, if so inclined. BTW, there are MANY more Mexican-themed
surf/instro songs out there that i did not use, for several reasons:
1) lots of them are on vinyl only, and I don't have the capability to
convert them to digital form (I really wanted Dick Dale's Mexico,
which I love, but vinyl only); 2) though the title was
Mexican/Spanish, they didn't sound sufficiently Mexican (for example,
Tony Meehan's "Song Of Mexico", The Fentones' "The Mexican" - both
acts are British, and what do they know about Mexico - great songs,
though); 3) they plain sucked; 4) I didn't have them. I have a 90-
minute tape by Larry "Moon Dawg" White, and there is an overlap of
only 3 or 4 songs between our two collections, so there's plenty more
out there. God, it seems that EVERY surf band has at least one
Mexican song! Amazing. Anyway, here is the list (please forgive the
indulgant and gratuitous ego-stroking on my part with regards to the
first song):
¡Fiesta del Cossacapulco! – The Space Cossacks
Mexico – The Ventures
Mexican Polka – Buck Owens
Sombrero – The Champs
Tijuana Boots – Los Straitjackets
Chihuahua Del Diablo - The Boss Martians
Rosarito 3-Day – Slacktone
El Cumbanchero – The Dave And Deke Combo
El Guapo – Langhorns
The Lonely Bull – The Ventures
El Toro – The Fathoms
El Conquistador – Bongo King
La Raspa – The Fireballs
Taco Wagon – Dick Dale & His Del-Tones
El Borracho – The Eliminators
Tequila – The Ventures
Cerveza on dee Mesa – The Fathoms
Hombre De Palabra – The Halibuts
El Rancho Grande – The Fireballs
La Chancha – The Stingrays
Baha-Ree-Ba! (Part One) – The Trademarks
Vamos Por Ahi – The Surf Coasters
South of the Border – Chris Isaak
Club Gabardino – Langhorns
Mexican Shuffle – Slacktone
Border Town – Eddie & the Showmen
Tijuana Taxi – Donna Ho
Too Much Tequila – The Champs
[Alternates - I almost used these, but ran out of space, and
something had to go - great songs, but the least 'mexican':
Aspiracion – Langhorns
La Cazuela – Satan's Pilgrims
Mexico Beach – Cosmonauti]
That's it! I hope you all have a glorius Cinco De Mayo, drink a lot
of cerveza, tequila and margarita, and eat a lot of tortillas, tacos,
burritos, etc.

So how much room does 1800 CDs take up and where do you store them? Do you
have your own card catalog? Maybe you hired an official librarian? Yikes! :)
That sounds like a great CD...enjoy!
Does anyone know how to *play* Taco Wagon? Is it a two string dealy?

Ha!! Funny guy. Actually, I gotta say that it got a bit unwieldy
for a while, but last summer my wife found these nice real-wood CD
shelves from Hammacher Schlamacher (that's what I call them) which
each hold a 1000 CDs, so we got two - plenty of room for expansion of
the collection, too!! I give it... oh, say six months. :) And now
my wife doesn't even mind that the CD collection is in the living
room, cause they look nice. I broke the collection down into several
categories, and alphabetized each one. Works for me. I can always
find what I want.
And, yeah, I know, I have a problem, but in my defense I've been
collecting CDs for 12 years now, and I'm definitely a music addict.

I am!!
> Does anyone know how to *play* Taco Wagon? Is it a two string dealy?
Yep. The main melody is up around the ninth position on D and G
strings and it stays on those strings, sliding around, and for the
second part of the verse it goes up to B and E strings, and sliding
around there for a while, with an occasional dip to G string. It's
all double-stops (urm, two-string dealy). I love playing that song,
so much fun, and really cool harmonically. BTW, it's all major
thirds, which any surf guitarist should be able to play quite well on
all strings, in all positions - they're used commonly, so practice
them, practice them.
Have a loco cinco de mayo!!

Ivan...you know I'm just razzing you about the CD collection. I have
probably (only) 500 myself.
Thanks for the tips on Taco Wagon!! I'll give it a shot this weekend.
Have a good weekend everyone!
