Good response DP, you were paying attention. And its quite possible some of
what you say is at least partially accurate. To play the blues do you have to
live it? To express the passion of surfing through music do you have to surf?
Obviously, it is not necessary. Hey its just a discussion. Don't take it so
personal. dogfish

The surfing experience is needed in the music scene,
in my opinion. Not by everybody, I like uncrowded
breaks after all. I think the understandning of
surfing is shallow until you start getting into it.
Until then you might copy a vibe from some other
records, that have a good dose of surfing spirit in
them, but you feel more secure about what you want to
say once you saw the beauty of your subject first
hand.

Some of their output might technically be called surf
music, but that is not what I mean.

I've surfed for 26 years, so I think I can handle this one. First, I
got into surf music through high-school surf films, especially the
Bruce Brown films. But I quickly moved on to Led Zeppelin, Hendrix,
Lynyrd Skynrd, CCR, Ted Nugent, the Beatles, along with all my surfing
friends. It's only recently that I've returned to and really started
appreciating surf instrumental music.
I don't think surfing has a lot to do with the appeal of the music.
Sure, it's called surf music because it was associated with the early
60s California cultural scene. And yes, there are certain sounds and
feelings that seem to be derived from surfing. Still, I don't think
that is the essence of the music. It borrows from so many
influences...Spanish, Middle Eastern, blues, Duane Eddy, etc., that
it's silly to think it owes its origins solely to surfing.
George Carlin once said, "how can you play the blues if you're white?
The job of the white man is to GIVE people the blues."
Counter-argument: Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Surf music is a musical form, which is to rock what bebop is to jazz
or metal is to hearing loss. It requires particular technical skills
and a sense of the music's history, drift, and direction. It doesn't
have anything to do with the current surf scene, as near as I can
tell. The surf scene is soooo very different than it was when I
started! If I were to reflect on it today, I'd have to create lyrics
to describe the localism, the polluted water that gives me sinus drip
and rashes, the world-travelers who shit in the pristine waters of
Cloudbreak, and all the middle-aged uppies (like me) riding
longboards! Oh, and the commercialism. I'd go back to instrumental
surf music to explain how it makes me feel, however.
Yeah, Dick Dale surfs. He surfs lousy. I talked to people who knew him
and they said that he never really surfed much, he just hung out
around Malibu and talked the game. So what? He played a mean guitar.
He was, and is, a musician. And so were the early surf players. And so
are today's surf players.
Once, I asked the snowboarding drummer in Dave Grohl's band The Foo
Fighters "Is the association of alternative rock music with
snowboarding/surfing/skating legitimate? His reply? He thought it was
a big marketing gimic designed by record labels to get kids to accept
certain bands. The skaters/surfers/snowboarders were the style
leaders, the ones the other kids looked up to and followed. They were
cool. So, get them to listen to the music, and all the wanna-be-cool
kids will follow like cows.
That's what happened with surf music in the 1960s - kids all over the
country wanted to be like the surfer kids in California. And those
kids had their own type of instrumental music. The result: surf music.
The important thing is not the surfing - it's a love of that original
form of music and a willingness to tweak, test, and push its
boundaries. And so, the music evolves in spite of, and with very
little relaton to, the sport. You don't need to ride a board to play
the music or love the music or understand the music. It doesn't hurt,
however...
My favorite break at dawn: Lighthouse Point, Metachen Bay, San Blas,
Nyarit Mexico (a left that breaks around a double point and all the
way across the bay on the rare perfect north swell).
I ride a 7'6" Hobie Dolphin-tri fin made by Stewart Surfboards, and a
9'6" tri-fin Gordon & Smith noserider special. Lamentably, I only get
to go to the ocean once or twice a year!
If I saw a "dry reef" while surfing, I'd probably poop my Birdwell
Beach Britches...generally, I don't ride big sucking waves and prefer
beach breaks to reef breaks. Call me a pussy...
P.S. My gear includes a Fender Jag, Line 6 Variax, and an Aria ES-335
clone, a Fender Hot Rod Amp, and Fender '63 Reissue Reverb tank. And
they have a lot more to do with my sound and musical expression than
my surfboards!
Yeehaw...now that's a sweet reply!
Thanks for setting it all down for posterity. This sounds
like the definitive response, and now the topic can rest
for a while.
Gavin, you are my hero.
cheers,
DP

Its always nice and safe to come 30-40 years later,
get all the must have records, see all the old guys
perform and THEN do your version of the originators
music. We all do that more or less. Maybe because you
can do it WITHOUT the real original inspiration. Its
MOSTLY white guys taking care of the roots music
drawers content. Yes, and bands like the Astronauts
were early adopters, they felt the kick in the stomack
of cranked showman, took notes and copied the whole
approach. After all, it was the first time such power
was unleashed on teenage ears. Outside of the water
that is.
