He plays so often around here now. I might go once a year, But I'm
not going to make every gig. I am still blown away by the power and
intensity of his playing but wish he would get back to his roots.
I almost like the Acoustic parts of his sets now. Since I've seen him
probably 20 times or more. I saw Dusty's first gig with him at the
Surf Museum in H.B. First he played with Jon and the Nightriders,
then Dick did a 5 or 6 song set. It was raining so it was inside.
I sat 3 feet away from Dusty's Drums. It was that day I realized how
amazing Dusty was on Drums. But I feel he is being held back so much
with Dick. His Forte is with Slacktone, and If you get the Chance to
see Agent Orange with Dusty on Drums, that will blow your mind. And
you will be tired just from watching.
On new years eve I opted not to go see Dick's show that was being
filmed for future release. To instead Go see 3 Balls of Fire with
Dave and Sam from Slacktone, and Steve Latination(sp?) from Agent
Orange/Jon & the Nightriders on drums, backing up Mike Vernon.
I heard from different people and Dusty that the DD show was good.
But was glad I went for the intimate cool underdog show.
In Oct. DD was playing local surf Friendly Bar(The Pitcher House)
with Torquays, and Insect Surfers. Considering it was a small cool
venue which Dick doesn't usually play, and 2 of my favorite smaller
bands were on the bill,I made sure I was there for that one. And
The old Dickster actually pulled a few rellics out of his ass.
Was blown away when he did The Wedge all the way through with no
Trumpet part and girl holding the sign. And was shocked and awed
to hear him do a ripping Version of the The Victor.
I agree with all the blah blah blah stuff being tired and boring
as hell. But I'm assuming he's a. in a rut. and b. doing fo rthe
people who haven't seen him before. Kinda like the picture perfect
Ventures shows I saw back in 97 and 98, with the bookem' Dan-o after
Hawaii 5-0. I fell asleep durring the 2nd time I saw them.
Definetly Check out Dick, but don't look for a modern surf band
comparison. It's louder and more mainstream, but worth seeing once.

That's very cool, Jeff. Though I've often shouted out for The Victor
at his shows, I've never actually seen him perform it. I assumed he
just didn't care for the song anymore, and never played it. It's
definitely in my favorite top three by DD. Great, great song. It's
nice to know he still performs it, if only in front of a dedicated
surf music crowd.

I'll definitely be yelling for this one too. Does he do Esperanza
live?
