The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo
Hello Dave;
Thanks for the nice words. The Space Cossacks are kaput - have been
for almost three years now. No mo'... However, we do have one more
imminent release: the new Link Wray tribute on MuSick will feature a
song by us. Art told me that he just got the CDs from the
manufacturer, so look for it in the next couple of months. There is
still some unreleased stuff, but nothing that absolutely has to come
out, so this will probably be the last you will hear from the
Cossacks. Though I wouldn't mind if the live recording of a
California show from '98 comes out eventually (the same night that
Jon & the Nightriders recorded their Raw and Alive CD)... Alas,
MuSick is not interested...
Best,
Ivan

Dang...sadness :(
I watched you guys at the 2000 Rendevous Reunion out at the
Galaxy Theatre...You guys played a tight set!
that's too bad, but the Cossacks left their mark on me.
are you or the other members of the Cossacks involved in
any current projects/bands?
are you all still out in the Virginia/ Washington DC area?
inquiring minds would like to know,

The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo
Thanks again for the nice words, Dave. I moved out of the DC area
in '98, first to Indiana, and in 2000 to Michigan. That was one of
the major reasons why the band fell apart. Catherine and Doug are
playing in a rock/psychobilly trio by the name of Superswank, where
Catherine sings (and of course plays bass). I don't know of anything
that Mark might be doing. I'm playing in the Troubadours with my
father, and two guys my age - we do only covers of the songs of the
Shadows, and we have a blast. We only play out 3 or 4 times a year,
and this year we'll be playing in Indy with the Nebulas on July 12th,
and in Toronto for Shadowmania North America (with several original
members of the Shadows present) on September 27th. Hopefully, we'll
also do a show with the Volcanos in Detroit sometime in August, and
we have a couple of private events we're working on, too. There you
go. I'm hoping to start an original project sometime this year,
though it's as likely to be metal as surf! We'll see....
2000 Rendevous Reunion - what great memories... I'm glad to hear you
were there. I will never forget that event.
Best regards,
Ivan

Well, I'll just have to be there for that one. I really wanted to go last
year and don't remember why I didn't get there.

Malcolm, that would be excellent! I really think you'll enjoy it.
BTW, it wasn't held last year. The first time was in 2001, and now
this will be the second one. You can find out all the relevant
details right here:
I do hope we get to meet in person there. Best regards,
Ivan

Then I have a better reason for not remembering why I missed it. :)
Think I'll probably drag a friend along to the next one.

Now I remember why I didn't go! It includes food and that's a problem for
me. I'm a pathological vegetarian and won't go anywhere that tries to feed
me. The idea of paying $180 for food I won't eat is just too dumb. So I
won't be there this time either. Or any other time. :/

I emailed them and asked them about this. They told me that they are
expecting lots of requests like this, and if they know in advance it won't
be a problem.
Also, its $180 CANADIAN (for the best seats), which is about $130 US, I
think....?

Yeah, right. It's NEVER a problem for _them_; it's ALWAYS a problem for
_me_. I'll go when they supply (and charge for) concert only.
It's 30-odd years for me.

Hello Malcolm;
I'm sorry to hear about the vegeterian problem. I totally understand
your situation, and wish it wasn't quite structured like it is. The
organizers are really trying to appeal to middle-aged people who are
in it for the nostalgia, who have some money, and who will appreciate
the convenience of having the entire day's event taken care of by
someone else. From what I understand, they're having great success
in selling tickets so far. For what it's worth, I know the
organizers, and they are fans of the music first and foremost, though
they've really gotten their act together with organizing the event.
I think they can be trusted when they say that they will take care of
you. They are definitely not doing this to make a buck, but to
spread the appreciation for the music of the Shadows.
The attendees will be in for a bit of a shock when we start playing,
cause we ain't no nostalgia act! In fact, I'm purposefully picking
out the most rockin' songs by the Shadows to play at the event. Oh,
and we're loud! Let's hope they let us get away with it. BTW, the
last time at this event I had a chance to speak to Bruce Welch of the
Shadows at length, and it's really something to meet him. He's a
total gentleman, and is very kind, warm and genuine to his fans.
It's worth going there just to meet him, believe me. And then Jet
Harris and Licorice Locking will be there, too, who are also happy to
chat to the fans and are very nice. How many times can you meet
(pleasant!) rock and roll legends in person?
Anyway, if you still don't fancy attending the event, the Troubadours
will be playing a couple of other shows this summer. We're playing in
Indianapolis with the Nebulas and Destination Earth on July 12th.
Then we'll be playing in Chicago on August 23rd as part of the
Exotica 2003 Weekend:
Lots of tiki art and fruity drinks (and with a bit of luck a few hula
girls too!) will be involved. We'll be playing with the Volcanos and
the Cocktail Preachers. We're still working on a possible Detroit
show for August or September. It'll be a great Summer! Hope to see
some of you at these shows. If you're there, join me in raising a
glass in fond memory of Rip Thrillby.

In case you're wondering who Bruce Welch is: the rhythm guitarist of
the Shadows; primary songwriter for the band, as well as for Cliff
Richard (when Cliff was still rock'n'roll). This is the man that
Sting saw riding around Newcastle (home of both of them) in a Rolls
Royce in the sixties (so when Sting was still quite young) and told
himself that if Bruce could be a rock star, so could Sting! This is
also the man who around '63 threw a party attended by the biggest
stars of the day, including the Beatles, and where the Beatles and
the Shadows spent a part of the evening mocking each other in front
of all the guests (of course, in good fun) exaggerating the other's
signature characteristics. This is also the man whose vacation house
in Portugal rock stars used to borrow to get some privacy; among them
was Paul McCartney who apparently wrote Yesterday while staying
there. Just a few anecdotes for you.
