Hello all of you Surf Music Lovers. The Autry has recently created
The Music of the American West Initiative (MAWI). This initiative
will help the Autry expand its current collection of music. We are
very interested in beginning to collect music from genre's other than
cowboy, western, and western swing. We are now interested in many
genres of music. This includes the surf genre, surf punk, and West
coast punk. In addition, we will be looking for West Coast Jazz,
Grunge, and West Coast Rap in the near future. But, back to surf
music! I urge all of the surf bands out there to participate in this
invitation to donate items. We are looking for bands that have had
hits and those that have not. Everyone is invited to send items.
Below you will find a note from Bryson Strauss, our Assistant Curator.
He will be the person that you will work with on this project.
The Music of the American West Initiative (MAWI) at the Autry Museum
of Western Heritage is a focused effort to document, collect, preserve
and present the rich musical traditions of the Western U.S. Under
MAWI and as part of the Autry Museum's ongoing celebration of coastal
culture in California, we welcome any press packets, posters, CDs and
other ephemera from individual artists or bands that perform West
Coast music genres (i.e. beach music, surf music, surf punk, skate
punk, skate music, West Coast punk, etc.). Accepted donations will
become part of our permanent collection and will be made available to
researchers and the general public through the Autry Institute for the
Study of the American West. They may also be used in future
exhibitions. Artists retain all copyrights.
Note: Offered donations are reviewed by a committee, which votes on
the appropriateness of each item to our collection. The Autry Museum
of Western Heritage does not automatically accept all donations. Any
item(s) that is not accepted for donation will be returned to the
sender. Each one must fit our collecting agenda and be in good to
excellent condition. The Autry Museum of Western Heritage is a
501(c)3 and all donations are tax deductible.
We look forward to hearing from you. If you have any questions,
