Blast from the Past: - Another reissue reverb tank question.

Dick (flatwound01) - 19 Apr 2003 17:58:05

As I was dissecting my RI reverb tank (in order to reverse-engineer
for my PTP reverb tank project), I came across the foam that Phil
mentioned last June. For some reason, that question stuck in my
head - I knew the foam was there, but didn't know exactly where it
was. Upon examination, there is a square of foam that (I assume) is
glued onto the back of the front panel of the tank - this is placed
so that it cushions the springs when the reverb pan locking device
is engaged.
Phil probably figured this out on his tank, but thought I'd pass my
findings along . . . I've got pics if anyone is curious ;)

Man, that WAS a while ago! I forgot all about it.
Yes, I found out if went right behind the springs and was glued onto
the front baffle. I just stuck it back in there and it seem to stay.
Someone from FDP clued me in...but it took 2 weeks for a response...
Ok, I have another request. Does anyone have good, hi-res pics of the
circuit board from a AB763 Blackface (Dual) Showman? I scored a 64
Showman but it has all kinds of crazy mods done to it. I have the
schematics/layout but some things look WAY different. They really did a
number on it. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Yeah, that was a while ago - don't know why I remember stuff like
that . . .
Check out this link, Phil - it's the Obsolete Electronics site. The
circuit shown seems to meet the description of the AB763 circuit.
However, the pic is far from hi-res. At least it's a start, and
provides some interesting narrative, too. Good luck!

Hi Phil,
Good question about the SD Antiquity's in a JagMaster. I think the sound
would be close to a CIJ with SD Antiquity's.(since the same wood is
used) (ofcourse not the Ishibashi ones, since they are Alder, I think
the CIJ and JagMaster is made out of Basswood?)
If you use antiquity's make sure to get the Antiqiuty 2's with Alnico IV
magnets as they sound a lot brighter and more Jazzmaster then the I's,
with Alnico II magnets. (this is for an aged effect, but as Mel Waldorf
said before, they sound too aged, and I agree)
If you consider SD's, also check out the Fender U.S. reisue pups for the
Jazzmaster as the are a lot cheaper then the SD's and they sound awsome.
I got a CIJ 62 reissue Jazzmaster with SD Antiquity I's and they are
O.K., however you will get more out of your tank with the II's or the
U.S. Reissue Pups. I tried both and the Antiquity I's sound too dark to
be surfy enough to my taste, not bad, but not harsh as you would expect
from a Jazzmaster. I hope to put Fender Reissue Jazzmaster Pick-ups in
my CIJ Jazzmaster, but they are not easy to get here in Europe and the
Antiquity II's are to expensive to my taste. Around $110 a piece :(
Hope this helps,
Jerry S.

Phil,
I may be able to get you some photos of my AB763 Showman as well. I
brought it to another tech last week when I discovered that the first
tech did not replace all of the electrolytic caps like I had asked
him to. I'll let you know when I get it back and if you are still
interested I'll open it up and take some photos. I'll be checking on
his work anyway....I can't believe that first guy ripped me off like
that.
I sent both of my Showman speakers off to WeberVST for recone/repair.
I got one of them back on Friday (the JBL-D140F). Weber did a nice
job, and even removed some glue the previous owner had spilled on the
frame trying to seal it into the cabinet. I played my Blues Deluxe
through it and it sounded amazing!

Yeah, I'd still like to see shots if you happen to open it up.
What's the difference between the D140 & D130? Both are 15", right?

I go this info from Mel Waldorf: both the D130F and D140F were offered on
the Showman models. Apparently the D140F had a heavier and more ribbed cone
as it was designed with the bass player in mind. To further support this,
Ted Weber emailed me and asked me if I wanted the original D140F style cone
or the D130F style on it when I sent it in for repair.
Best,

DOGFISH (cowellkiki) - 20 Apr 2003 23:13:24

To Brian Neal and group, I couldn't help but add my two cents. Don't forget
that the 130f was specially made for Dick with the rubber ring around it so the
speaker cone wouldn't twist when played at high volumne. And we all know that
Dick Dale plays at high volumne. I think the 140,s are great but the 130F's
are original to Dick Dale and Leo Fender's design to withstand the high gain
drenched reverb sound. dogfish

Well...yeah...I've held both a D130F and a D140F and they are essentially
the same thing. The D140F appears to have a heavier cone with more ribbing
(for her pleas...oh never mind).
