Hey Halibut Rick, here is an obvious question you probably didn't see
coming: are you a Halibuts alum? If so can you give us the lowdown on the
bands history, your involvement, and any future plans? Do you also play with
Eddie Angel in the Neanderthals? I thought I had read that somewhere. There
is so little info about The Halibuts on the web I was hoping you could fill
us in. I have to admit I don't own any CD's, but I have several Halibuts
tunes on various compilation discs, and they are always outstanding tracks.
Thanks,
BN
Yup, I'm a Halibut. One of the founding members (started sometime
around 1980). 20+ years, this could get long! Here's a really condensed
history.
From '82 to now, we've had the same lineup except for a few different
bass players.
Pete Curry (guitar)
Joe Lyou (sax)
Randy Haskin (drums)
Dave Sherman (bass) (he's also lead guitar of Hillbilly Soul Surfers)
Bruce Paddy (keyboards)
me (guitar)
We did 5 albums from 82-96:
Halibut Beach (What?/Iloki)
Gnarly! (What?/Iloki)
Live At Toes (our own release)
Chumming (Upstart)
Life On The Bottom. (Upstart)
You may still be able to find Chumming and Life On the Bottom. I think
they may still be in the Rounder catalog. There was talk of
re-releasing Live At Toes with some bonus tracks, and it was remastered
for CD, but the project kind of fizzled.
In '98 I moved from LA to San Diego and about that time Pete joined
Los Straitjackets. He's the Eddie Angel connection, not me. We
continued to play steady for about another year until pretty much Pete
was always on the road with LS. We didn't play at all last year. Lucky
for me, Mike Palm (Agent Orange) moved down to SD just before I did.
Mike had filled in on bass with the Halibuts for about a year and I had
filled in on guitar with his side band the Deoras a few times. So when
he said he wanted to start the Deoras back up, I signed on.
The Halibuts were hoping to do a few shows this spring, but Pete got a
little busy with LS. We haven't called it quits yet.

Rick,
Thanks for that info. Very cool. Who started the band and how did you get
interested in surf music?
You guys are considered 2nd wave...were there any other surf bands active
when you started the Halibuts? What prompted you guys to start a surf band?
What kind of gear did you guys have then and now?
I understand Pete Curry is a real gear nut also and has some really old
Jazzmasters???? I read somewhere that they were used as reference material
when Fender decided to create the American Vintage reissues?
I got to meet Pete briefly at a LS show. He was super cool along with the
other guys in LS.
Thanks again!
BN
PS I recall reading a post on Cowabunga from a guy who had played with Eddie
Angel in Europe in the Neanderthals. I thought he was an ex-Halibut. I must
have got that confused, sorry.
PPS Sorry for the barrage of questions but I eat this stuff up.
Brian,
Joe (sax), Kevin (bass), and I started the Halibuts. We were friends
going way back as kids. We were all surfers, longboarders. We were way
into the whole 60's endless summer thing. We were living in Manhattan
Beach and the whole 60's longboard revival thing was starting up. Dewey
Weber was having these contests, inviting all the old timers back -way
cool. That 60's thing got us going into collecting surf music and of
course playing surf music. We were only goofing around the garage back
then. Jim Dunfrund had/has his surf music show on KXLU and introduced
us to Chris Ashford from What?. Chris was putting together the first
What? Surf compilations and asked us to do a track. That was the push
that moved us from the garage to getting a little more serious.
We met Pete during the first recordings for What? records. He was the
engineering for us in his studio. We all hit it off pretty well and
asked him to sit in with us at an afternoon college gig we had coming
up. We kept asking him along to other gigs and it wasn't long before he
was a flatfish.
When we started playing, there were just 2 other surf bands in LA. Jon
& the Nightriders and the Surf Raiders. When we were starting out, I
remember asking Bob and Neal of the SR lots of questions. They were
very cool to us. We shared quite a few gigs together.
When we started, I had a Fender Deluxe and a '72 Jaguar. Pete was
playing a Deluxe and and some kind of Yamaha guitar. We both used
outboard reverbs instead of the built in reverb. But, within a few
years, we both had Showmans and a few more guitars. Lucky for us, in
the early 80's that old fender stuff was a lot cheaper than it is now.
Right now I play out of either a 63 blonde showman with a 12 tone ring
cab, or a 65 blackface showman with a 2x12 cab. I use a 66 blackface
reverb - the only one I've ever owned. For guitars I play either a 64
Lake Placid Blue Jaguar or a 63 Olympic White Jaguar. I've always
played Jaguars. Pete usually plays out of a blond bandmaster or a blond
showman, a Jazzmaster, & reverb. He does have a few different
amps/guitars to pick from.
I'm not sure about Pete and the reissue story. He used to have a
relationship with the Fender folks, but I'm not sure about that one.

Rick...thanks for sharing! Very interesting. I was just in Manhattan Beach &
Redondo Beach a few weeks ago on a business trip. Coming from a guy born &
raised in Iowa, the scenery was breathtaking. Holy crap, a Lake Placid Blue
Jag! Do you have any pictures you can post? I love guitar porn. :)
BN
I don't have a pictures, but go to www.deoras.com. That's me in the
back. You can kind of see it. It's got the nice patina thing going so
it's getting greenish. And the white pickguard is definitly "mint
green" nowadays.

I scored a copy of Chumming off of half.com. I ordered it on Friday and got
in on Monday -- through regular 1st class US mail! Anyway, this is great
stuff, a great change of pace for me. I love Bowling Ball Gardens! Cool!
Hey Rick, I was curious about the sax. Not too many 2nd or 3rd wavers kept
that tradition alive (The Fathoms are the only ones off the top of my head).
When you guys started, did other bands at the time have them? I don't think
Jon & The Nightriders did, but what about the Surf Raiders? Did you just
happen to know a guy who played the sax or was their a conscious decision to
get a sax player to make a "proper" surf band?
Thanks!
BN
You know, we were just talking about rhythm guitar in surf, and it
didn't even occur to me that Rick has been posting here lately!
Well, here is a guy who is a true master of rhythm guitar!! I
actually remember seeing a video of one of those all day surf
extravaganzas with a whole bunch of surf bands crammed in one day
somewhere in SoCal from probably somewhere around '96 or '97. Well,
most of the bands were not very good, but then the Halibuts came on,
and the whole atmosphere changed - it was finally a party! And the
best part of the band: Rick. His rhythm guitar playing was so
precise, assured and full-sounding, I just couldn't take my eyes off
him. However, it seems to me that Rick is coming from more of a ska
background in his approach rather than the usual Astronauts stuff -
more like a mix of ska and Paul Johnson. Very strummy. I loved it.
My guess is that the sax was because of the ska background, as well.
So, Rick, when will the Deoras CD be coming out? Are you on all of
it? Any of it? I'm really looking forward to this. I wish I could
see you guys play...

It didn't really have anything to do with tradition. Joe (sax), Kevin
(bass), and I (guitar) all started learning to play music at the same
time. Joe just wanted to learn sax. Since the 3 of us were best
friends, the band was started around our 3 instruments.
Good thing Joe wasn't going for the accordian.

Awww shucks. Thanks.
Actually the ska thing came from Joe and Kevin. They were really into
it. Joe even still has a Vespa. And the sax played right into the whole
thing. When Chris Ashford produced the first 2 albums for What?/Iloki,
he was also really pushing us to be a ska/surf band. I do enjoy playing
that kind of rhythm more than any other.
The Deoras have a CD that we sell at shows. It's all covers. It started
out as our promo CD for trying to booking shows and we pressed up a
bunch for sale. The website has a couple of cuts from it
(www.deoras.com). We are at the very early stages of starting to work
on the first real CD, but with Mike in Europe for the next 6 weeks
(Agent Orange), it'll be a while before we got back to it.

Hello Rick;
So, how do those of us that don't have the privilege of being at your
shows in person get our greedy little mitts on your 'demo' CD? I
downloaded the songs off your website some time ago, and greatly
enjoyed them.
BTW, I really love ska elements in surf music - I think the two forms
of music are very complementary, and I don't think anybody has really
exploited all the possibilities that such a combination offers. I
have your LP Gnarly, and really love the songs with the ska thing
going on, but you moved away from that on your CDs, which is too bad
(not to say the CDs are bad - they are quite great, actually). In
fact, I notice also that on Gnarly you were behind a lot of the
songwriting, whereas on the CDs Pete completely took over - does that
account for the move away from ska?
It's too bad that you shelved the CD release of Live At Toes - i
would have welcomed it.
Keep on skankin'...

Wow,
We do MoT as a Ska song too!!! And we're on the East Coast of
Canada. I guess it's one of those songs that cries out for ska. Our
soon to be released live CD also includes a ska version of Diamond
head.
Mike
Very cool. I believe that the version of MoT by the Eliminators had
some ska elements, though I wouldn't say it was fully ska. But yeah,
absolutely, it's screaming for it.
Now, Mike, aren't you guys a three-piece? How do you do surf/ska as
a three-piece, since the rhythm guitar is so important to get the
skankin' feel? Overdubbing?

Those who like Ska rhythums may also like our song 'Eyes of the sea', on our
album Warning Heavy Surf Advisory. The rhythum track has a nice reggae feel to
it. dogfish of the concaves from santa cruz
