Fender RI '63 Reverb Tank - questions

Jerry (whipeoutboy63) - 04 Apr 2003 08:03:22

Hi All,
I'm still in the process of buying a new/2nd hand Fender Blond reverb
tank.
I got an agreement with the seller that I can try it out during a
rehearsal with the band I play in before purchasing it.
Luckily for me the seller is very much into surf and gives me this
oppertunity.
I'm not very familair with the settings of the Fender tank, I heard of a
5-5-5 and a 6-6-6 combination for Dwell/Tone/Mix.
I use a CIJ Jazzmaster with SD Antiqiuty's pick ups. I don't have a
Fender amp but my retubed Sovtek sounds pretty clean.
So what are the suggested setting for the tank and the amp to get a good
surf sound.
Any help would be highly appreciated since even 2nd hand Fender Tanks
are pretty expensive here....
Tia,
Jerry

Hey Jerry!
I guess a "good surf sound" is really what sounds good to you - myself, I
prefer the Dwell-Mixer-Tone setting of 6-6-6. Nice n' surfy! Sometimes I might
back off on the Mixer to a 5, but I tend to stay in that range. Just my
personal preference - I think the 6-6-6 setting is a good starting point for
you - experiment from there.
Good luck!

My settings are:
7-7-7: for balls out Dick Dale screaming surfverb
5-6-6: for a good default reverbsetting...Dwayne Eddy twang
4-4-5: for a cool Blue Hawaiians luau,"Sleepwalk" sort of
tone
well there you go...those are my defaults
like anything else, your own experiments will guide you.

Oddly, my Fender reissue reverb unit gets really harsh and screechy
when the tone is turned up past 3. This, even with a 510cp mica cap in
place of the former 290cp ceramic under the mix pot! So, I keep the
tone down and crank the mix and dwell - 8 or even 9 on both gets that
wet bottom sound of "Pipeline," while somewhere around 6 - 6 - 3
(tone) works best for Ventures-type stuff, which was less reverby than
other surf bands. I back it off to 5-5-3 for blues.
I also have noted a lot of radio frequency interference with my Reverb
unit - a real source of irritation. Something to consider if you live
near strong radio signal towers.
Gavin
P.S. Does anyone want to venture an opinion on the Danelectic Spring
Reverb pedal? I think this would be a nice backup, and really like the
idea of a kick/splash pad. But I wonder how close to the "real McCoy"
this thing really is...opinions?

I wonder why they always change the 290 p cap ? If your unit sounds too
harsh I would alter the 10n cap ( C9) on the tone pot because that's the one
that cuts the high tones. Try a 22n. The 290 p cap just cuts bass tones, if
you put a 510 p you add a little more bass. Maybe that's a good thing but
not very effective if you are complaining about too much treble.
just an engineers point of view

I've got one of those Dano Spring Kings. I use it in the house for
practicing along with a non-reverb Deluxe. And I've been packing it
along for gigs in case I have problems with my Fender unit. Knock on
wood, I haven't neede to pull it out.
I tried a few reverb pedals before I picked this one. It was the only
one that really sounded like spring reverb to my ears. Most people seem
to go for the Holy Grail, but it seemed to have some distortion in the
decay when I tried to really make it drip. I even e-mailed Electro
Harmonix about that and they said it sounded like the pedal wasn't
going to meet my needs (at least they were honest).
Anyway, it's a nice pedal, but I'd never consider it a replacement for
a Fender unit. Just a backup.

the Halibuts / the Deoras
P.S. The kick pad is no real feature. Just like a Fender unit, if
you're on a shakey stage, it's going to crash a lot on you,
